This may seem a extreme crazy question, but has anyone converted the fuel tank to a fuel cell or tank in-place where the spare tire goes?

Ive got a couple of extreme ideas for this thing but the fuel tank is partially in the way. I don't know if I'll do it but just seeing if anyone has or if I'm going to pioneer this crazy not needed idea?

I would think it might be a slight safety issue with ground clearance and rear collisions but much safer than doing this on a unibody car. Sounds like a lot of work with extending fuel lines and wiring.

Well if I do it, it will be a Fuel Cell made for EFI.. but its no more safer than getting T-boned hard.. trust me I see alot of nasty wrecks and the safety I think is a bit better.
Not sure on size or ground clearance or what will fit.. haven't got that far.
The fuel line and elec is a piece of cake though. no biggie. I have built alot of cars/truck from full frame off restoration/restomods, line extension and wiring is small on the list of complexity to this.

I wouldn't think location safety-wise would be an issue, (especially if you used a real fuel cell). I'd bet the only real reason the fuel tank is in it's current location is so they could also carry a full-sized spare, which you would obviously lose. The spare void is pretty large, just the volume of the spare tire (if you have 265/70/17 spare) would be ~35 gallons.

I have plans to put a cell under the bed where the spare used to be, but it will likely be a few months before I tackle the project. I ran a fuel cell in the bed of my 03, and it was a fairly easy install.

What are planning on doing that requires this?

Exhaust system and air ride system, air ride isn't for sure though. I want to get back into Auto X at a enthusiast level, so I want the truck as balanced as possible for that use while still being street driven.
If I put the air ride in I want the bed to stay as is so the tanks will go on both sides on the outer frame.

But I also have OCD, really really bad when it comes to and a non-symetrical exhaust drives me nuts, and just like to fix what I think are factory flaws.

Ah so I'm not the only one who has thought of this

I'm not the only one crazy enough to AutoX a truck then. I miss it so much. Been busy with kids. I have some Magnesium OZ wheels for the Dakota with 335's out back I want to try, 295 fronts. Kumho V710 slicks.

I used to use my old 67 mustang with TCP coilover suspension and very very, very modified 289 and 3 speed man-trans.. Had so many modifications I was lumped into the heavy mod class with purpose built Auto-X tube chassi cars. I was 18-20ish when I did it and had no chance to win or even place... just did it for fun. I think the rules and classes have changed a bit though

I learned from alot of the older guys there that would take us younger guys under their wing and teach us how to drive... got to drive a brand new Viper back then on the course. Good Times

It's definitely more about balance and grip than power. A small block would be great. Trucks weight distributions are horrible but I have Viper brakes and a full Hotchkis setup. I really want to add some weight to the back down low by the frame and try out the new tires and the TrueTrac and gears. I had 4.56's and I had to use 3rd a lot which killed some times. Now with 4.10's I should be able to stay in 2nd gear the whole track after upshifting at start. A Viper would be fun but definitely a road course car. I've driven one but just on the street. Got to track a Gallardo once though, a real blast but too easy with AWD and auto trans.

I couldn't keep it straight at all.. I cant remember if it was a brand new 00 or 01 viper at the time but my mustang was actually faster in the quarter and I could drive the wheels of my pony but that viper i couldn't keep straight.

There is a little falcon near my house I've been thinking of buying to build into a Auto-X car... or just turn the early 50 dodge truck split hood body and frame I have into one... I kinda want to build it up into a rowdy rat rod sim to the Gas Monkey pikes peak pilot truck build though...

I have too many projects...

I'm more interested in the Idea:naughty: Why is the fuel tank in the way?

Mentioned it above, trying to balance out the truck, fuel tank on one side loads the weight and causes it to push on hard corners to that side. that and having a equal length true dual exhaust system. and I will most likely add a air ride system and use dual tank system and put them on each side of the frame for balance..

All this is still very conceptual. I'm still researching and designing the truck so this may change. Once I'm happy with what I want to do I'll put together a build list and parts and start doing it.

Plus I'M OCD and like symmetry, its the architect in me mixed with hobby car designer/builder

Viper has a lot of torque but a really tall rear end ratio so it is not very linear when it builds up. The guy who let me drive his nearly wrecked it taking a sharp corner on the gas. Must have been one fast **** Mustang. The guy I bought my truck from (Hotchkis engineer to ProComp to Tesla to Polaris) has a Capri he is building up into a road racer, similar I think in size and platform.

It would hold its own... It was a low 12's car... fastest I ever went was 11.7... but I think that was a fluke or something cause it was a consistant 12.2 car and the 11.7 was only 1 time... It was very very worked over to get to that.
Wish I didn't loose it to the cops back in my younger foolish days.

I have my own handcuffs story, the back of those cruisers are not comfortable. Luckily I still have my Dakota. It is in need of some major TLC...and probably a throwout bearing.
