I have the same issue, when filling up from a 1/4 or so it will shut off filling always between 3/4 and 7/8th. I have to have it topped to get to the full line, No, it doesn't spill out either. Misaligned or what?? Been that way from day one. New '21 Big horn 1500.

No clue really what the issue is ...but I have tried everything possible myself ... cleaning the evap canister, blowing the lines to see if there is any obstructions ..nothing has helped ... I did notice however that the newer gas stations don't make the nozzles click ...

What I think is happening is the pressure that is released once the canisters or what ever the system is gets screwed up for what ever reason ... the nozzles themselves get messed up too ..

I noticed at a new gas stations for 2 months I could fill up without the nozzles clicking off .... but now that the gas station is a few months old the gas nozzles are all fawked up ... so I think that pressure sent to the nozzle is much stronger with these messed up evap systems and they mess up not only our trucks system but the nozzles as well .... you can barely hear brand new gas nozzles make any noise and the ones that click every few seconds make a very distinctive sounds and you can hear the pressure coming out of the nozzle right before it is going to click off ...

In Arizona though I didn't have this problem at all when I took a trip up there ... those gas nozzles were not like the ones in California .... there has to be a way to bypass what makes the gas nozzles click off ....

This may or may not apply but if you leave the ignition on or the vehicle running while refueling the fual gauge can be slow to respond.

I have the truck off completely. I get done filling and start the truck and get on the road and it never goes higher than 3/4-7/8. Several different stations.

I had the truck looked at today at the dealership and they found no obstructions with the tank but there is a service bulletin on it so they ordered me a new 23 gallon tank. I mentioned wanting to swap for a 33 gallon but they said Chrysler “doesn’t recommend putting in a bigger tank” but didn’t have a reason why.

Absolutely "force" them to get the 33. I wouldn't give a second thought to "chrysler doesn't recommend", there is a thread on a different ram forum where members are doing the upgrade and paying out of pocket for it. It's definitely possible to do 33 and there is no downside.

My 2015 Ram 1500 often had that issue, clicking off after I put in the first four gallons. Then it would fill all of the way. It definitely had to do with certain gas stations. Somewhat annoying but never to the level of wanting to drop my truck off at the dealer for *** days while they diagnose it to "nothing is wrong."

Hopefully the new 2021 that I'm picking up tomorrow is better, but again, it's no big deal. At least this time the truck sould be programmed to recognize the size of my gas tank!

I don’t have a link. The dealer had something printed out but I didn’t get a copy

Why are they telling me that they can’t upfit to a 33 gallon? I’m willing to pay for the whole upgrade.

So they have a TSB for new 2020 trucks but still will not acknowledge that there is something wrong with all the trucks they have sold in the past even after we continue to complain and take our trucks in for them to take a look at ? complete bs !

That paper just says it can't be done. There are guys who HAVE done it, so disregard paper unless they can provide a reason beyond "not compatible". Complete BS.

This guy has done it, and the thread is quite large with other people doing it too. Guy below has parts list.

I must not have inserted my LOL at the end of that attachment. I agree it was the lamest excuse possible to give me. The dealership said it’s not that they “can’t do it, it’s that they won’t “. I intend to visit another dealer.

Reading between the lines, they are saying not to do it because, It's not a "one-to-one" swap to a bigger tank. You just can't upgrade to a bigger tank by just changing the tank, there a few other things you need and a reprogram. My guess is, customers are asking for it during the warranty work while the tank is out and it helps the service department to pull out a letter and show the customer they can't do it. Takes the pressure off the service department.

** There is also the issue that some trucks may not have the bracket welded on the frame for the 3 support strap. I just looked and my truck doesn't have the bracket.

I think you’re on to something here but I made it clear I understand that I would need several new parts including a fuel pump to make it work. I’ll try a different dealership.

I'm sure most dealer service departments would be more than willing to do the swap if you pay them to do it. You'd be on the hook for all parts and labor. People have done this. Seems like I remember one person saying it was in the neighborhood of $3k. I priced out the parts a few months ago, and it was around $1k for me to upgrade my tank. But, if they're replacing the tank as part of a warranty repair, they will only replace with the same parts that came off.

You need to make sure you have the bracket on the frame for 3rd support strap. For unknown reasons, some trucks come without the bracket. Its right in front of the smaller tank, to the right of the connector that is circled. The T cutout is where the strap end goes and if you follow the bracket back you can just see the top of the stud where the other end of the strap would attach. I haven't seen that you can purchase the bracket and have it installed. Without the bracket, there is no support for the front part of the longer 33 gallon tank.

I would feel better by adding the strap too, but if you check out the link to the forum there are guys running the 33 gallon with just the 2 straps. One guy fabricated his own third strap.

True, just wanted everyone to know that the bracket may be missing and if they buy everything and take to a dealer, the dealer may not be so inclined to do the install without the 3rd strap. The whole missing bracket on some trucks could also play back into the Tech Tip not to upgrade to the bigger tank...who knows.

I picked up my truck today after the dealership replaced the 23 gallon tank. They filled it with gas and it was full when I picked it up. We’ll see how it goes.
