In a few days I'm going to try and tackle installing my 3.92s on my day off at work. I'm going to be limited to a few hours of using a bay and lift, so if anybody has done this themselves I will appreciate any input you can give me to speed up the process.

I really need a step by step of what to do and in what order. I have a open diff so that should make it a little easier.

Is the pinion gear bearing pressed on?

What's the crush sleeve and how do I know when it's tight enough?

I have too many questions that need answers so tell me what you know!

Ask someone at a shop that has access to Alldata to print you off step by step instructions.

Its pretty self explanatory once you have it in front of you. The tricky part is shimming it which I wouldn't recommend do yourself... If not shimmed correctly, you'll be wishing you paid someone to do it. If you shoot me a PM, I can pull it up on alldata for you Monday and fax it to you. Even then, it won't give you the shim info because that's all based off of each vehicle and how much play it has.

Not trying to be an ass, but from your questions I would say this is a job for a professional.

x2!!!

I've always done all my own work on my vehicles for 30+ years,
but two things I leave to the professionals are Gear Swaps and window tint.

The shims will be determined by backlash. To check backlash you need gear paint to see if the pinion teeth are meshing properly with the ring teeth. If not then you have to break it back down and add a shim. Repeat until you have the proper gear mesh. You should be able to find more specific instructions online.

The 9.25 is not rocket science like everybody makes it out to be. Granted the adjustments can be a little tricky, its not all that bad. However, you do need a few specific tools to do the job correctly.

Do you have:

1) Hydraulic press
2) Dial indicator with magnetic base
3)Tool to adjust collars for backlash through the axle tube or access to a
welder to build your own
4) Cutoff wheel to remove old bearings
5) Basic hand tools and impact gun

If you answer yes to all the above, i will write a diy for the install.
