Yeah I think the backlash there was between 7-8 so I’ll try to pull it in the right 6.. I’m feeling pretty good where it is now so I think I may leave that pinion depth where it is.

I could (confidently) leave it there and lose no sleep

Usually using the factory shims will get you really close. I never used one, don't even have one.
Close like horse shoes and hand grenades.Sorry close doesn't cut it for me.Housings, carriers and gear sets are never machined exactly the same so there's a really good chance that the factory shim won't be right.JMHO.

That is true but it can be done without using a pinion depth gauge. That is why you do have to use the gear marking compound.. that is the final test. Yes it takes a while to get it done and I personally would not have done this to my daily driver so I have time to get it right.

MHO it doesn't make sense to hear someone say I can rebuild an entire car yet will not touch a rear end. If you have a passion/hobby for something then do it no matter what anyone says.. may take you longer than the PRO's but who cares now you can say that you've done it yourself.

The only downside I can think of is now that people know that you can successfully rebuild a rear end, they may be asking you to do theirs--LOL Great job and thanks for the write-up! I think a lot of us learned some things. Also thanks to the guys that chipped in with their advice and expertise.

That is going to be a negative lol as long as everything works out with this I do not plan on doing another any time soon. It's not that hard of a job just very time consuming and your using tools that you wouldn't normally need unless your doing this for a living.

Same here I really appreciate everyone chipping in... If anyone does need some help with this I can at least help a little!

Gear don't like close either, they'll explode :D. But it's a good starting point. It will tell you whether you need to shim the pinion in or out. Better than starting with nothing. I never had specialty tools until I started my shop. My dad never believed in them. I remember he setup gears using feeler gauges and still runs that car. I never used a pinion depth gauge and I don't think I ever will. Plus most people don't have the extra cash to buy them. I try to help out the "just trying to get by" folk :)

Just finished up today didn’t get a chance to work on it through the week. Replaced the crush sleeve with a solid sleeve a lot easier to get it right.

Drove about 10 miles.. slowly and took it to 60. Zero noise so far... everything seems good. Going to drive it to work this week and try to put 500 miles on it then changed all the fluids.

I guess if I hadn't been working at a flat rate dealer(that had a pinion depth guage)I would've had to play with shims also.Wouldn't be my first choice of action though.Nice to do the job once and move on.

Indeed... would have been a lot quicker if I didn’t have to play around with those shims.
