From a dealerships perspective if a guy consistently goes out of state to purchase and we never have any skin in the game come warranty time I now charge them warranty repairs and reimburse them whatever the manufacturer gives us. To many times we have a warranty issue with our construction equipment and the dealer who sold it never has to deal with the unit because it was sold to another state. Alaska's prices are high cause of our shipping and cost of living is just high up here.

That would not fly at any new vehicle dealership and would be in violation of their franchise agreement to charge for warranty repairs upfront based just on if they did or did not buy from them. Maybe construction equipment sales is different?

I do know new vehicle dealerships many times will put you third in line for warranty service scheduling over bought on lot customers and full shop rate paying customers before getting to a bought elsewhere warranty repair but they still get to it. I have found you can mitigate this by already being in their system for previously paid maintenance , accessories and parts bought from them to at least mitigate not initially buying from them in the first place.

But to charge upfront and only reimburse what was paid from the manufacturer would not fly in a modern new vehicle dealership and probably would violate some state consumer protection laws.

I contacted Kubota, who we are a dealer for, prior to arranging this with a certain customer who has 30+ pieces of equipment locally all bought from out of state and they said we wouldn't be the first dealership to do that and per warranty agreement that we are only obligated to fix it. Nothing is time stamped and nothing is price stamped. So with that being said, it very well could be different for construction equipment dealerships but for our dealership agreement we are in the clear. And apparently other dealerships are as well haha.

My local dealer loves to get service customers and doesn't seem concerned where the vehicle originated. I take all my service there and they do a good job.

I got $10,000 off my Laramie in first part of June. Woodhouse in Blair Nebraska. MSRP $50,250.00.

Woodhouse sells a LOT of Ram trucks. When I was looking for my 2014, it seems every 3rd or 4th truck I looked at up here in the area had been sold brand new from there.

My local dealership doesn't seem to care that I didn't buy the truck from them either. Got the manifolds replaced no questions asked when I took it in for the leak.

No dealer owes you a truck at the price you want to buy just as no consumer owes their business to the dealer who wants to sell a truck at MSRP.

Go negotiate the best deal for the truck you want and buy it. Get over what someone else may or may not have paid. You don't know the cost basis at the dealer nor the truth of the guy on the Internet telling you what they paid.

You are correct, and I certainly don't feel like I'm owed or entitled to a great price on a truck. The intention of my OP was not meant to imply that RAM owes me anything. With that said, RAM happens to heavily discount their trucks and the "magic" 20% off MSRP number is very realistic in many markets. Unfortunately for me, it just hasn't been working in my area. If the right deal comes along, I'll jump on it.

I guess a lot has changed in the year+ that I bought my 2015 Sport..... In spite of my 2009 Silverado being in the shop every other month for some minor annoyance... Before I bought my 2015 Sport... I hit up 3-4 Chevy/GMC dealerships within 50 miles of me..... The best I could do (for similarly equipped) was dropping 10k more for GM and their stupid boxy wheel wells.

I suppose the biggest difference is you have one maybe two vehicles. Vs someone who refuses to buy local and has 30 pieces of equipment. I digress. Truly. We have thousands of a customers are who are decent people to and consumers and bought their stuff out of state for various reasons and if they aren't a pain in my rear I absolutely except their warranty work the old fashion way but I feel a business needs to protect itself to an extent as well when dealing with someone who nickels and dimes you are every corner. As a consumer I don't look to gouge the dealer but nearly get a fair deal for both parties.

Yeah, your construction equipment comparison is a apples and oranges one compared to new vehicle dealerships.

That being said, I sure would not let chump change come between make a deal with the local and probably servicing dealer than buy elsewhere if possible. Buying local and servicing local can pay off when things like just being out of warranty and getting a "goodwill" warranty claim approved, where as buying out of area and expecting a local servicing dealership to go the extra mile for these instance would lead to disappointment. Saving $500 on the front of the sale may cost you thousands because people try squeezing the last nickle out of a deal.

That's the mentality we are trying to convey. We went the extra mile on a piece of equipment to show this guy what buying locally could be like and he snubbed us hard with buying 5 more excavators from out of state.
It's a vicious circle. Some people you just can't make happy haha.
I try to buy my vehicles through local dealers and if it just doesn't work out then I'll look a city over. But it's nice to build a local relationship.

I was about to contact Woodhouse when i was looking for a Ram but it ended up working out good with a local truck I found. That place has an INSANE inventory of Rams.

I have never been to a dealer that treated me second rate because I didn't purchase the vehicle from them. Thats pretty bad. As others have said, they should just want your business and try to build a relationship if they are any good. And if someone is treated well at a service department they very well may be inclined to try and purchase a vehicle there as well. If I took my truck to a dealer and they told me I had to pay for warranty work because I didnt buy the truck from them I would literally laugh in their face.

As was stated previously apples to oranges in regards to what I said BUT to thicken the plot, if you laughed in my face I'd tell you to get it done at another dealership and then you'd be sitting their with a broken rig cause I'm the only Kubota dealership in the state.

Fact is, I'd venture to guess most consumers don't have the money to go to court with a dealership. I know damn well my owner could crush all of our buyers as he owns 8 other companies along with ours. Be a good customer and businesses will be good to you.

Your Kubota dealership owner either is or is not in compliance with his franchise agreement between him and Kubota on his practice. If not, then he is being a ****.

new truck..

My last few vehicle purchases have been this way. The funny thing is even when you walk on the lot and all the salesman has to do is handle the paperwork because you got the financing out of the way, the trade in is paid off with title in hand and price has already been agreed upon, it always seems to take the same amount of time to get the deal done and drive off the lot than if you walked in cold to start haggling over everything.

Dealership lots are like in their own time portal.

Dealer called me cause i offered to sell mine 2010 to a friend..I was in found close to what i wanted, made a few changes and then she was shippin in from another dealer...Took dealer longer to install back up cam and tq my powder coated wheels on that it took to do the paper work and get approved for the other half of my deal.....Paperwork wise,20 min...Got 25000 for my 2010,2000 for preferred customer,14000 off for dealer rebates..
