All,

New to the forum. I have been looking at getting a 3/4 ton truck for a while. I have always leaned towards the F250 (I know herracy here) but a couple friends have Dodge's and have been pointing me in that direction. I really hadn't wavered in my Ford mentality until I learned about the lifetime extended warranty. That really caused me to take a long look at the Ram. With planning to have this vehicle for many years that is very appealing.

I recently found at a dealer near me a NEW 2017 Ram 2500 Lone Star Mega Cab 4x4 with the 6.7L I6 Cummins Turbo Diesel sitting on a lot. Only has 153 miles on it. The truck is beautiful and drives really well.

I do alot of RV camping where we tow our RV. This truck will have no issues with that. My guidance request is this, I have heard of some issues with Dodge engines but I can't find in the 6.7L engine is in that bucket or not. Also, anything I should be aware of?

Please hear this is not a bash dodge question. It is someone who has been a F250 person for years and researched a ton on Fords. Dodge is a new realm for me and now that I am considering something else I am just trying to see if there is anything I should be on the lookout for.

Thanks in advance.

Cummins has been in business since 1919. They began by building diesel engines that used the best available design and technology developed by Rudolph Diesel in the 1880's. They have continously improved their engines over the years.

The 6.7L CTD is a very reliable engine as long as you maintain it properly which is true with all diesel engines.

Some issues arose with the 4TH generation engines specifically the diesel particulate filter and emissions control systems early in 4th generation production. Those issues were fully sorted out and Ram CTD owners have driven millions of miles since.

I am not sure what you heard but rest assured, the 6.7L CTD is a great engine that will give you years and years, and miles and miles, of service.

Welcome to the forum.

I think(need to confirm) you can only get the lifetime warranty on gas engine vehicles.

The lifetime warranty was discontinued on November 30 2018. It was only available for gas vehicles .

I called the dealer and asked him the price for it and they said 3500-4000 for that truck. That they would give me the final price in financing but that was the range.

Maybe they changed the policy.

Who knows. I will keep everyone posted.

Trust me! If you go with a "RAM" (Not Dodge) haha - when you want to get the extended warranty, just act like you don't want it. Say I am maxed out as it is. I was told many many years ago, anything you sign up for in Finance is a gimmick and a huge money maker. I've added extended warranties on my last 3 trucks free with a less of a payment walking into the finance dept. They will do all they can these days to get that in their contact. Even change number and interest rates. They guy said, well what if I can get you this extended warranty and you leave my office with a $6.00 less payment. OK! haha

But you will not regret the Ram. Each truck manufacture has it's little things. The 6.7 is by far the most reliable motor out there. How many times has Ford had to fix their engines and come out with a complete redesigned motor?!??!? count the motors.. you'll see what 4? All while Ram/cummins had the 6.7 the entire time........ says a lot.

Good luck!

I will be honest I was shocked when I realized a 2500 had a 6cyl engine. I looked at all the specs and the inline 6 has the same stats as the 8cyl engines. I am sure it’s plenty beefy or that would have come out. It was just unexpected to say the least.

I’ve had two Ford SD trucks, a 2010 f350 super cab, and a 2015 f250 crew cab, both 4x4 with the fx4 package.

My biggest problem with them is that Ford does nothing to refine the empty ride. Both of my trucks rode like dump trucks, literally they would bounce your drink out of the cup holder. Compared to the ride of the Ram 2500 with variable rate coils, the difference is night and day. My wife and kids hated both fords, and eventually they refused to ride in it.

The 2015 had a shaky shake above 60mph that Ford could never fix- wheels, tires, driveshaft. I traded it in on a 2016 Ram 2500, life was good again [emoji4]

Now I’m in a 2018 Ram 2500, I don’t think I’ll ever go back to Ford. On top of that, they look like a square shoe box now.

Your dealer can’t get you a lifetime FCA warranty, they stopped offering them at the end of November. I think the maximum now is 8/125k or something like that. I bought the lifetime maxcare warranty in late November, before they were discontinued. You don’t have to buy the FCA warranty from the dealer, you can buy them from dealers online for much less- google Ziegler ESP and you can get online quotes.

Huge 15L diesel engines that power big rigs are inline 6 as well. Modern ones can have upwards of 700hp and 2000lb/ft of torque. Many diesel traditionalists turn their noses up at V8 engines.

I don't think that is a FCA lifetime warranty he quoted you. I think it is one of the extended warranty packages available from other sellers. The best one out there, IMHO, is the MaxCare from Chrysler Service Contracts.

Most Mopar vehicles have had very little issues with engines. Their transmissions are the weak link but have been getting much better here in the last few years. I don't think you can go wrong with the Cummins 3/4 ton you are thinking about. Most owners are easily getting the 2-300,000you are talking about. You are probably going to get biased reviews on here because most people on here love their trucks! If it were me, I would get some info off of here & then get on a Ford forum & get some info there. Probably good either way... I have heard good reviews about there last Powerstroke they have come out with. The only issues I have heard about were the same as one of the previous members on here. Horrible ride & they sag a lot when you start putting the weight to them. Which really doesn't make sense usually soft ride = sagging truck.

As stated lifetime warranty is no more. 8 years 120000 miles is the best you can do. Do your research and pick the one you like best. Best non biased answer I can give.

The Big problem we are having with Ram is not the vehicles, it's the dealerships. So many guys getting screwed out of warranty covered items, treated like trash and sent packing.
I myself have many horror stories, latest would be rolling into the dealership with 2400 miles on my brand new 2500 6.4. Lost 5th and 6th gear, limped into the dealership. They said there was nothing they could do, nothing wrong with the transmission. 2000+ miles from home and I got nothing, and I have the Maxcare lifetime warranty. 3 days later 6th gear was slipping, pulled into a different dealership 2500+ miles from home and I got ****** around for 24 hours. Hotel, food, frustration and delayed planes, they could care less.
You Need to KNOW I thing about Ram, once you drive that truck off the lot You Are On Your Own...

Thank you all for your feedback. Not sure what I am going to do. The nice thing is I don’t need a new vehicle right now so if something doesn’t fee right about the deal I will just walk away.

If I can get the numbers I want on the truck I will be a dodge owner soon. I will keep you posted.

I went into the dealer to talk to them about the price and they weren't budging at all. Kind of shocked to be honest, for a truck they have had on their lot for at least a year they are holding firm on their price. So I just walked away. Too much money for a 2 year old truck - even new. For $1500 more I can get a 2018. I don't get it.

Still considering Dodge. Was looking at a couple at another dealer. Dodge is certainly in the running.
