For whatever reason, my headlights when I go to turn on the high beams the lights go out completely, then sometimes they work fine, what's up with that?

Probably the dimmer switch. I know that in my older car (92 camaro) the switch was connected to a rod that went down the column to an actual switch to change the lights. I'm not sure how these trucks do it. Probably in the stalk itself. Take a look at the wires connected to the switch. If not...maybe it needs to be replaced?

Headlights on modern trucks will use relays due to the power requirement. Easy things to check would be the wires around your switch and going to the relay, and checking to see if the relay is firing on and off, you should be able to hear a click. If its not those then your next best bet would maybe be a bad connector or ground.
