Help Diagnose an engine noise

This is on my 1999 Ram 1500 4x4. The noise in an intermittent metallic clanking that seems to be coming from the front of the engine near the Harmonic Balancer but obviously it resonates. I haven't checked anything with a stethoscope yet.

Here is a video of the sound. It is the intermittent clanking. The engine is at a constant idling RPM in the video.

Any help is greatly appreciated. My first instinct is the timing chain slapping but I could be way off.

Sure sounds like a timing chain hitting the cover, but I have always been under the impression that it's more of a tick when it starts hitting the cover. You're right though, definitely coming from the front of the engine.

I would also pull the belt and check the pulleys as well as the water pump and fan cluth.




And btw, it appears you and I have very similar trucks, only a year difference though. lol

Pull the belts and start it to eliminate anything belt driven.

I am pretty sure it is going to be the tensioner pulley. I sprayed a little lube behind it and the noise went away. I drove to town and back and the noise came back. I picked up a new tensioner pully and belt and will see if that permanently fixes it.
