I bought a set of used tires with about 6/32 and was going to put them on my 2014. Turns out the tire shop won't put the 1/4" spacers on. I wanted to try out a bigger tire to see if I liked it without spending $1,300 for new ones. They say the 35x12.5x20 Cooper Discoverer STT Pro won't fit on my truck without spacers. I was okay with the rubbing if it was at full turn, I would just put the spacers on at home later. They said they wouldn't even fit and would rub on the upper control arm which means I wouldn't even be able to drive it home. I have a 2.5" leveling kit on the front. I thought that the 1/4" spacers were enough but they said with them they wouldn't even fit. I stuck my hand behind my tire and theres not much room...

Has anyone ran into this? Do I just eat the couple hundred bucks I spend on the darn things and toss them? I live in an apartment and could put them in the basement until they sell on Craigslist but I don't think used tires of that size will sell all that fast.

Are they wrong or am I? I know I'm wrong for cheaping out and trying used tires first. The tire shop said they would test fit one for free up front but I didn't have 3 hours I had to get back to work.

ANY help would be appreciated.

the whole need for the 1/4" spacer is to keep the tire from rubbing the upper control arm. Is there another tire shop you can try that will put the spacers on?

doubt youll find a shop that will install spacers, its a liability thing, at least here in Oregon anyway no shop will touch spacers unless they are removing them

I can call around, not many tire shops in the city even want to put used tires on it was hard finding one. The ones that will are smaller shops that said they can't put 35" tires on.

that sucks, and I understand the shops postion - but there should be some kind of form that can be signed releasing the shop of any liability related to the spacers.

Granted all tires are going to fit differently. I ran a 35 with stock wheels with no spacer, no rubbing at all. Granted it depends on if you have a lift spindle or anything on the truck. It looks like it's going to rub before they are installed. See if they'll mount one for you to test fit.

Go home, put spacers on yourself, go back and have them put tires on

I use to do that when I had a shop. The biggest thing with a 1/4" spacer is that you lose 1/4" of threads for the lug nuts to grip onto. While with our trucks the studs are relatively long it does effect the overall grip

it also depends on which stock 20's you have....the o.p. has 20x9's which in most cases a 12.5" wide tire will rub.

They said if they have spacers on already they wouldn't even service the vehicle..

3 options:
  • bolt on spacers. Some shops will work on vehicles with these installed due to the fact you aren't jeopardizing safety and loosing threads
  • remove the wheels have the tires installed then reinstall with spacers yourself. [not ideal but doable]
  • ask them to test fit one of the tires for you. Save the hassle of ordering spacers if they aren't going to work or fit without.

If they tires rub the upper control arm the shop won't mount them I would assume, so putting spacers on afterward I would think is not an option.

thanks guys, looks like I'll just suck it up and try to sell them on CL if I can't find someone that can mount them and eat my loss.

another option would be to put the truck up on 4 jack stands and if you have a buddy with a truck take the wheels and "new" tires and have them mounted and balanced. Takes the shop putting them on the truck and their worry about spacers out of the equation.

I suggest instead of the quarter spacers get 1.5 so you can just bolt them on and not worry about loosing any threads and you can always take the tires in off the truck and just install them yourself

not sure what level he has, but a spacer that big pushes the wheels pretty far out that he might cause other rubbing issues.
