I have a 2004 ram 1500 hemi and I'm having a lot of problems, I just bought it 2 months ago and it's been ticking ever since I bought it, yesterday I checked the oil dipstick and it had no oil in it, so I added oil and drove it down the street and my exhaust was thumping and kind of stuttering and my truck was shaking, it does the same thing at idle, and when I rev it up blue smoke comes out, and there is oil all throughout my exhaust, I plugged it into a scanner and it read misfire on 2, I tried switching plugs and wires and coil packs around but it read the same thing, my friend told me I would need a top end rebuild on my motor, does anyone know what all of this could mean?

he is thinking it might be the head gasket. Do a compression test on all the cylinders. if one does not hold pressure well enough you probably have a bad head gasket.

How many miles on it? Could be a lot of things, including a bottom end rebuild.

Since it's an '04 it could also be a broken valve spring causing the misfire (and ticking). You're probably looking at doing new head gaskets, valve seals and valve springs for sure. Hopefully everything on the bottom end is OK but its hard to say, especially if it was that low on oil.

I did compression tests and it's at its minimum amount of compression and my whole motor is shot, do you guys know where I can get a 5.7 hemi for my truck for a reason able price? And also what other year motors will go in my truck?

All the engines are physically interchangeable, but there are two different tone rings used. Not sure when they changed. Maybe someone can post up which is compatible with your PCM.

That's not too bad than, but having read my first post, do you think my motor is shot? Because it still runs but it putters and shakes when idling, everyone else was saying that it might just be head gaskets and valves, which is why I just want to rebuild the top end, how can you tell for sure?

Yep, putting air to each cylinder one at a time @TDC you can listen for air leaking into the intake manifold meaning the intake valve is leaking. Air leaking into the exhaust meaning the exhaust valve is leaking and if air is coming out of the crankcase would indicate the rings are leaking. If the motor is banging then it has bearing issues and will definitely need to be rebuilt. Bad valve seals can certainly burn oil especially with bad valves. At the very least it looks like the heads will need to come off and rebuilt. Good luck..

What were the exact compression numbers for each cylinder? This could give us more insight.

I think my mechanic said some were at the minimum of 100 and the others were around 87 and that cylinder 2 is shot and full of oil, and the motor is no good anymore since it ran so long on no oil

Since you are having a mechanic do your diagnosis, I'll assume you are not going to do the actual work yourself. You can price rebuilt engines, but this sounds like a candidate for a used engine. Good luck.

More importantly where did you buy it? Privately or dealer? Any warranty on it from purchase? Can't say for sure if they knowingly sold you a bad truck but sure sounds like it.
