Has anyone tried adding some ATF to their fuel to fix this?

Sent from my SGH-I337M using Tapatalk 4

I have never heard of using ATF in gas. I have heard of it, actually a lot, with the diesel crowd. I had a 6.0 Ford before this truck and it was very very common to add ATF to the fuel to help lubricate the injectors because the modern low sulfur diesel doesn't provide much lubricity.

Chiming in on the Hemi Tick, had it with my 2011 Dodge Challenger R/T 5.7
Drove me crazy starting it after sitting a while. Would take a few minutes to quiet down.

I threw in some seafoam and premium fuel to see what that does

They all do it. I test drove 5 new ones, including 2 with under 10 miles, at the dealer and they all did it. It will not get worse, it just ticks. One was a brand new 2500 crew with 1 mile, They had not moved it in 30 days. It sounded like a gm 5.3 on a cold winter day with 200000 miles on it.

My guess is the light oil has no buffering qualities and valve train clearances are generous. A drain back valve on the oil filter will help. I do not know if the oem dodge filter has one.

I just live with it. I cannot hear it over the dual exhaust only if outside listening to the motor. A buddy has a 2012 grand Cherokee hemi, 50k, it does it too. He also has a magnum rt with 150k, it does it as well.

Just a trait of the hemi.

Ticking? you should hear the Pentastar!

Hi Guys : drool:
My 2012 Wrangler Rubicon started to tick at 600 miles ... like your
mom's old sewing machine especially on cold mornings!. Just Google "Pentastar tick".
The colder it was ,the longer it ticked - from 5 sec to 15 min.
I found two things helped a lot
1-Lucas oil treatment
2-Use the engine block heater
So when I ordered my Ram I made sure to include the engine
block heater

Good Luck & Thanks to all! :worship:

so, the hemi tick seems to be normal ?
my 2 week old truck with only 400 miles on it just did it today when leaving work. this is the first time i have heard it. truck had sat for 10 hours, it was mid 80's today here in south florida, and on start up it ticked for maybe 4-5 seconds, then went away. i had my door open talking to a coworker when i heard it. i have not noticed it before this, but maybe because i always have my window up and door shut when starting.
anything to be alarmed with ?
sure dont want to have to "live with it" for the rest of the life of the truck, which i hope to keep for 10-15 years..
thanks guys

Synthetic oil thread in my sig.

My engine is very quiet, in my sig also I recorded it.

Redline oil has helped most of the people who use it about 10 at last count but not all. So far 2 and maybe a 3rd coming have not had success running it, and Motul is a Redline clone and should help also. Other brands have helped too, Amsoil SS and Penzoil Ultra. Seams like Mobil One is hit and miss. For the reason these oils may help read the synthetic oil thread. What you are experiencing is metal to metal contact in your lifters usually when you first start your truck. I am sure you have heard the ol saying most engine wear happens at start up. Well, to make it worse, we use a very thin oil, so while it does lubricate very fast, it has the weakest film strength and drains thoroughly when hot and sitting. So a quality oil provide better film strength by up to 40% at operating temps and additives like molybdenum and some oils like redline also have greater zinc numbers. My engine sounded like a meet grinder and now is very smooth, and all I did was change to Redline oil. Why redline or Motul? They have the most Moly 880ppm, and group 5 oil base which has the greatest film strength at operating temps, and high zinc are among the reasons it is my choice. If you do use any synthetic, get a synthetic filter like royal purple and you can run 10k miles easy.

I was exactly like you, my hemi tick came very early on and got really bad fairly quick, to the point it sounded more like a knock then a tick. If your tick.knock is happening right at startup, it will likely get worse and the likely cause is the lifters. If it keeps happening the first thing I would do is take it to the dealer and see what they say. Most will punt and say normal, and if they do at least you will have a reciept of the problem. Then consider using a quality oil, I can't stress how important it is to use any synthetic over a blend or even worse straight conventional oil. It is because of out engines and the thin oil we are forced to use to run the MDS.

You can also get a catch can and run a upper cylinder lube with your gas like lucas or marvelous mystery oil. However, oil is much more effective but running a catch can will keep your oil cleaner and lucas does make my upper cylinder quiet is some of my cars.

I never heard of running ATF in the gas and wouldn't do it personally. Many people used it as an engine flush in the oil because ATF has a lot of detergents. However, if you are running Redline or Amsoil and you have a catch can or a good working PCV, you will never need to run atf for a flush.

thanks so much for the input. i listened to your video...
i will keep an ear out for the tick in the coming days and report back.
here is my problem, i got the extended warranty, bumper to bumper, for 5 years and 60k miles, and the oil and filter / tire rotation plan, so im taking my truck to dodge every 3k miles for an oil and filter change for the next 4 years..i wont be changing my own oil.
can i demand a better, synthetic oil from them ? im thinking not. if not, is there an oil additive i can add to it myself after each oil change that can help with the lifter tick ? im hoping there is as this would be the easiest way for me, with the dodge free oil change plan i have.
thanks much for the help..... kind of disappointing in the noise i heard this afternoon. all my buddys have been ribbing me about getting a dodge... this is my first dodge product ever.
thanks again

There are no organic Moly additives that I know of, if there was that would help. Moly in suspension additives wont help. Using 5w30 may help but also may mess with your MDS, but you could program your MDS out or use your tow haul button every time you get in the truck. So I'm sure you could request that weight oil. I highly recommend you don't use additives but there are a couple that wouldn't hurt. PM me with additives you are considering and I will respond to you via PM.

I too was very disappointed with the hemi tick, especially since is started so soon after buying it.

man, now im kind of more confused. lol. how would pressing the tow/haul button each time i start the truck help with the ticking ?
i dont want to reprogram anything on the truck since im sure it will affect the factory warranty ? this MDS system really seems spaceage to me. i dont know anything about all these computer controlled systems the new automobiles have these days. been driving a 1990 chevy k1500 4x4 before this new dodge.
thanks again for the help...... and if i do continue to hear the ticking, it will go back to the dealer and have it documented and go from there. i sure dont want my new truck to be torn apart already....
thanks

So your tow haul disables mds for the time your button is pressed. If your MDS is disabled you can use a thicker oil with no issues. Some guys run 5w30 and have no issues with engine warning lights while some others get CEL's.

Could a guy run like 4 or 5 quarts of Royal Purple and 2 or 3 quarts of Redline mixed together for the molly benefit that's in the Redline? Would it be ok to mix different brands of oil or would you even benefit from doing this? Thanks in advance!!

I absolutely believe so, but you would of course be running a less quality oil then 100% group 5. So blending synthetics is perfectly acceptable, it is much higher quality then blending conventional and synthetic. I do it all the time if I have a qrt of something lying around, which I do. I have 4 synthetics in the garage so my wife's car will get the mixes until they are all gone while the ram gets the redline.

The common conception is that Royal Purple is group 3, and just maybe has some group 4 mixed in. Only Motul and Redline make strong and continuing statements that their base is ester based better known as group 5. Everybody else mixes unless they specifically state otherwise. Group 3 is still much better then conventional.
