So I was thinking of putting some 20" or 22" wheels on my truck for street use as I have a set of 17" steel wheels with 33" mud tires for off road duty sitting in my garage.
My current street set up is 17" American Racing cast aluminum wheels with Michelin Defender tires.
The wheels weigh 26 pounds and the tires are 50 pounds for 76 pounds at each corner.
The wheels I was looking at are Velgen VFT9 in 22x10 and they weigh 35 pounds each, which is not bad for a 22"x10" wheel. The tires are Nitto 420V 315/45x22 and they weigh 66 pounds! 101 pounds!
Do I really want to add 100 pounds of unsprung weight?
The 20" wheels are only 5 pounds lighter and the tires 305/55x20 actually weigh pretty much exactly the same as the 22" tires. So with the 20" set up I'm still adding 80 pounds!
I'm not sure the looks and added grip from the wider tires are worth the weight penalty...
