Back when I had my '02 Silverado, I spent a lot of time on a Chevy truck forum and a lot of those guys used gutter guard from Home Depot to make their grille inserts. The ones that took their time turned out awesome. I've been thinking about making some for my Camaro, but haven't gotten around to it yet.

You can make a grill look decent with the right amount of effort.
Most of the ones I see look like they cost $20.

Really? are you gonna seal your k&n instead of just the heat shield walls? Ive been thinking about doing that with mine, so that I wouldnt have to buy a volant which comes sealed with a port for a funnel.

To the op, Iv seen thread for it on other forums, some come out nice, others not..lol I think if you take your time and get a good finish on it, maybe powdercoat? It would look good. Iv thought about giving my attempt with the wire mesh and making a grille like the ones rubber frog made but Im not sure yet.

Are you referring to "Gutta Mesh"?

Not my truck but:

I did a mini version when I cut my hood and the front out of my scoop to make it functional:

I played around with a punch press & a sheet of stainless steel a couple of years ago, it's still hanging up in the barn, I will probably get around to making it into a grill some day:

Nope going to have to force feed air in from the bottom the hood seals the top so should get at least 80% more air

Yeah! The gutter grille! That's what I was talkin about, so how do you attach it to the inside of the grille?
