I paid more attention to where and when the sound is yesterday. The sound is coming from the exhaust exit. I usually never pay attention to it until the rpms get up and I hear it.

The exhaust does have a deeper smooth sound under 2000. It is definitely muffler related. I never paid any attention to the under 2000 sound, as it is quiet and not f a r t y.

The muffler is the problem, as it is a louder muffler than most stock mufflers, and the distance between the muffler and the exit is rather long with the longer bed, and the pipe is big.

I have ran into this before with an over the road truck I had in the 70s. 318 (8v71) Detroit that the mufflers had been gutted. It was loud and sounded great. From 2100 to 2500, where it was turned up to, it would rattle the windows. That truck, and the truck I owned before it, are most likely the reason I have tinnitus now.

This is the same effect I'm getting. Ram just used a muffler that is more free flowing and big, subject to exhaust pulse noise as certain rpm.

Maybe most people don't notice it, have noise canceling in their trucks, or something. I do notice it, but will have to live with it or cut up a good exhaust system and install an ultra quiet muffler.

I'm sure this is the same muffler used on the HEMI, and they are prone to be louder. I don't see Ram spending money on a different muffler when they have one already that will fit both engines.

There used to be muffler shops everywhere around here, now, not so much.

Way back in the 90's, my '87 F-150 with a 4.9 needed a muffler. The new 1997 F150 models came out with a one year only muffler with a tailpipe that exited in front of the passenger rear tire.

I was up at the muffler shop one day and saw a new 1997 cut off complete unit there. I had it installed, front exit tailpipe and all. Loved it, no exhaust sound, no more rusty tailpipe behind the wheel, and it is still on the truck today, looking and sounding as good (ultra quiet) as it did back in 1997.

Maybe I should sneak up to my son's (who now has the truck) house and cut that muffler off the old Ford.

Speaking of good sounding factory exhaust systems, my '94 Ram with the V-10 sounds amazing at idle, especially when the engine is cold.

2018 1500 with Pentastar. What will stop the drone from 2000 rpm and up? I don't want to choke out any power from the engine, but the drone annoys me. I want total quiet.

The wife's Ford Edge with a 3.5 V-6 has no exhaust sound at all. Do I need to buy a Ford factory muffler at a junk yard and have it put on? I don't want to hack thinks up, but will add on another resonator or replace the factory muffler if needed.

Why would they put out an exhaust that drones on a V-6, unless it has the same muffler as the Hemi? The exhaust looks like a factory Hemi single exhaust.
I have a 2017 QC Tradesman and I have no drone at all. Are you the first owner? What gears do you have?

You might just add a resonator after the muffler. I used 18 inch Cherry Bombs on my 69 Hemi Roadrunner to cut the drone on the highway. On a 60s Olds 88 with a 455 I took off the factory resonators and 2 weeks later I had them put back.

Can't say that I have ever noticed any annoying drone on my 2017 Laramie that now has just over 90,000 miles on the odometer. But, I do have hearing issues. Though usually low frequency sounds seem accentuated due to my high frequency hearing loss. I imagine a "drone" as being low frequency. I am presently on a trip from the Northeast to Florida. I will have to pay closer attention the remainder of the trip.

All factory. This is what I have pictured below... The sound is more rpm related exhaust buzz of the cylinders firing off. We old timers remember the glass pack mufflers under the front seat area and pipes ran to the rear bumper. At a certain rpm the exhaust will change tones and rattle off, for lack of a better word, whether 6 or 8 cylinder. That is what I'm getting.

Most people wouldn't notice it or think twice about the sound. I don't like it. The factory muffler is loud enough to cause the pulse rattle above 2000 rpm.

I've owner several straight 6 engines, and numerous V-6 engines of all makes and sizes. If any of you can remember standing at the rear of a car and someone revving it up and it and letting off the exhaust, the back rattle you heard is a form of what I'm getting.

I used to cut my 6 cylinder exhaust pipes off just behind the factory muffler and put on a turn down. This made for a more of a V-8 sound, and stopped any suck back on the exhaust when revving up and letting off.

I could do that here and eliminate all the sound I don't like. If Ram had used a quieter muffler this wouldn't happen, or used a different resonator. This exhaust is engineered for the Hemi, not the V-6....for sound, not complete quiet.

It's not deal breaker. I just wondered if anyone had noticed the sound and had a quieter muffler to replace the factory almost quiet.

Like I said, it's not really noticeable until I head up to the mountains and the engine is pulling pretty good up the steep hills.

I can hear the UPS truck out front due to the low engine resonance, in spite of a high pitch loss. My wife, who can hear a gnat fart from 100 yards, can't hear the delivery truck, though! Go figure.
The exhaust resonance has been an issue since cars were invented. Resonators cure that issue. Ever notice all those weird compartments attached to the stock intake systems on most cars? Those are resonators to eliminate intake noises, too.

Similarly, when a commercial jet airliner passes over my house on approach to Houston Intercontinental Airport, they must throttle the jets up and the roar is awesome.... no resonators for those! The REAL entertainment is when one of the 747's passes overhead (rarer these days) on landing! Tim the Toolman Taylor's wet dream! ARR ARR ARR!

I just skimmed some posts, But sounds like a used truck, If it looks like new, I bet its aftermarket with some load muffler, or opened up.
My son had a 1500 hemi and it has aftermarket system on it and I can't stand the noise/ drone in it.

I have never had one with the 3.6 in it so not sure what factory sounds like.

Talked with the previous owner before I bought it. 100% factory exhaust on it. Only turned 24k miles the week after I bought it. I have been all under it since I've owned it and inspected it well.

I would wager all the Express models with a 3.6 make this sound. Most will never notice it, especially if living in flat areas.

I also think the factory HEMI exhaust is too loud. This is from someone that cut off exhaust on everything I owned for decades. I have tinnitus now, and noises I used to like are annoying. The exhaust on mine only really sounds out under a decent load above 2000 rpm.

I have hearing aids, I hear low's OK , high I don't ( wife included)
Daughter has very bad tinnitus, Has a implant deaf on left, helps a bit, Artillery & concussion I guess.

I have been in a couple dodge vans that I presume have the v6, and don't hear anything.
I can hear the exhaust on my hemi if I put the peddle down, but just normal steady speed I don't hear it at all, The Wife's 2008 CRV is way noisier, road noise. I only has 80 Km, about 50,000 miles

I would look for a Walker quiet flow direct replacement. i remember many years ago i installed one of these on a 2nd gen 360 and i remember remarking how quiet it was.

I started a similar thread a while ago, I’ve got a 2017 that gets loud in the winter ( I live on the cold prairies). Took it to the dealer, they took it for a ride and said it was normal. I learned to live with it, but I’ve never owned a vehicle besides this that gets louder in the winter. If your truck does this year round I guess it would be a different issue.

115K on mine. Drive it on 3K mile trips once or twice a year, half of which is through the Rockies or foothills, no droning. 100% stock exhaust on my 3.6L

I get heat shield vibration rattles on startups on cold days. That's as exotic as my exhaust gets.
