So I was chilling upstairs when I heard what I thought was something bounce off my truck that was parked in the driveway .... And kids playing outside.

I looked out the window and saw a golf club handle without a head on it laying on the grass on the pass side.

I walked outside and saw my girlfriends 10 year old son walking away from the house with two friends with a headless golf club handle in his hands. I then looked around my truck and the piece I saw from the window was gone = same piece.

I then told them to "Get over here" and asked what hit my truck. .... Silence. So I asked again. This time I was told it was the golf club shaft. And it went through my BakFlip G2 cover. Grrrrr.

I haven't even reached a peak of madness yet. Just wait till his mom gets home.

I wonder if just the one panel is replaceable???

Sorry man, this happens with kids. You just have to breathe deep and move on. Oh and punish the **** out of them...

Patch from the underside? Like a rubber tire patch kind of thing.

Good luck!

Well .... I'm a State Trooper so being calm comes natural to me. Calm but steamed ;)

I am going to contact BakFlip tomorrow to see if I have any repair options and go from there.

The boss gave me 100% authority for any punishment I feel is appropriate. At this time I am open for suggestions ;)

She also offered to purchase a replacement if needed. I don't want to go that route if I can avoid it. It'll just end up coming out of my pocket another way.

Just hate seeing my stuff busted up.

I'm curious what you'll hear from BackFlip as well. Please keep us posted.

Here's a great way to teach the lad a lesson, I used it successfully on my Son. I always told my son that if he told me the truth he wouldn't get in any trouble I just wanted the truth but if he lied then the trouble would begin, so he never lied to me and has grown into a great man serving our country.

I would tell the lad that since he lied (trying to run away so you didn't know it was him is a lie), that he has to pay for it but if he had come to you with the truth all would have been forgiven. Now here comes the pay part, if he gets an allowance then until it's paid he gets none. If he doesn't get an allowance then he can work it off, mowing lawn, washing pickup, pulling weeds or whatever...

Just a thought, it worked with my son.

I haven't a clue how to make children value anything. My friends kids are harder than hell on everything. I do my best to not let them ride in my truck. They do pretty good when they're in it, but even then it's "My mom works in a body shop, she can get you a new one". I know where THAT idea came from...

I'd vote that you ground him. Allow him nothing other than basic needs food and the restroom for a couple of days. Set a limit and stick to it. Nothing enjoyable, no TV etc.

Whatever you do, don't end the punishment early. Make him stick it out till the bitter end. Parents who back off of punishment have brats for kids.

Since corporal punishment is out, it sounds like its time to teach the little miscreants how to get up in the wee early hours of Saturday when its not too hot and hand wax a large truck--while they miss their cartoons and can't sleep in. :uhoh2:

I'm surprised it damaged that easily. I thought they were pretty re-enforced. They must have stabbed that club in there pretty hard...

I like this. Although, I wouldn't want to associate hard work with punishment.
Here's how I would modify it a little bit. I would say that he's on the clock for $10/hour...as long as he gives a good honest hour's work he earns the full pay. Here's the kicker, 100% of his "earnings" will go to to the full value of the tonneau. This way he gets an appreciation for the fact that the property he damaged actually cost you hard earned money, and the value of it.
After an hour or two of good hard work, sit him down during a break and work the numbers. "If you were on a real job, you would have earned x ammount of dollars. The tonneau costs x. ...so based on that, it would take you x hours to be able to buy one. How would you feel if someone damaged your property through careless actions, by accident, or even on purpose, that you worked hard to afford?"
IF the light bulb comes one...finish the work and then go for ice cream...he is 10 years old after all.

Sometimes you gotta take matters into your own hands....

They call it rearing a child for a reason. :)

However, things happen, kids is kids......
unless the kid has a history of bad behaviour.

and I wonder if he is the actual culprit or if one of his friends.......

I appreciate the punishment suggestions. Minimum wage doing jobs I assign him seems like it'll work.

We have had the conversations about being a man and being truthful when accidents happen. I know it wasn't a malicious act, but I'm disappointed he didn't meet me at the door to tell me what happened. That's what I am focusing the short term grounding on. After he successfully completes that then the slave labor begins.

He can start scooping Rottweiller poop with a latex gloved hand ;)

I called BakFlip earlier today. My fear was confirmed. It is a single unit and the damage is not repairable. They offered to sell only the cover for @$650 with out the rails. Told her I had the RamBox and didn't need the rails. Also I can a complete new one for less than that.

I'll look into creative engineering to patch it. It won't look the same but with hunting season starting tomorrow I need a lockable cover that won't leak.
