The past few oil changes I've noticed my oil has been darker and darker until it has turned solid black. I drained this yesterday, it has 743 miles on it. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1438780647.988664.jpg
I know this is not normal, and I want to figure out what is causing this as quickly as possible.

So far I have no symptoms of the motor running any different than it should, no lights on the dash or messages.

I also have what looks like oil residue in my exhaust tips.

I'm at 84k miles on my 4.7 and I've ran full syn since 42k when I bought the truck. The oil pictured above smells pretty strong of exhaust as well.

Check your PCV if you have one can't remember off the top of my head if the 4.7 does or not and after that you may a valve/seal issues.

Has fuel consumption changed? Any running issues? Just a random thought, but if the injector spray pattern/atomization gets off, you run the risk of washing the cylinders down and getting more contaminants in the crankcase. Try a couple doses of Techron, or some other good injector cleaner. Also, if the PCV you recently installed was from a parts store I would not assume it is good.

I have not seen a change in fuel consumption. Also, it holds oil. No visual leaks and the dip stick always shows full. The pcv is a mopar part

Did you install a diesel? That's what that looks like. You are not getting complete combustion which is why you're creating so much soot. Pull all your plugs and see which cylinders are heavily oiled. Change the oiled plugs and see if that helps out. I would also do a leak down test just to make sure you have proper ring seal. Check again in a few hundred miles. If they're carboned up again then I'd start looking at the injectors, swap injectors between cylinders, if the problem migrated with the injector swap it out for a new one.

No I did not put in diesel oil, but I agree with you. It does look like diesel oil.

I ordered a test kit from blackstone labs, I'm gonna send in a sample of oil so they can test it. Hopefully they can tell me what's going on

Was it like this before you changed your pcv? Soon after? I'd get a catch can as well. I'd get a smog test before an oil test. I can tell you the oil test results without getting it, you have unburnt fuel. It may be helpful to see how much fuel you have in there though.

No it's not normal IMO, if I couldn't get it fixed at some point I'd be thinking trade-in time.

No it was not like this when I changed my pcv valve. I changed that at 64,559 miles. I'm now at 84k. I noticed the oil dark black around 79k miles. If there is in burned fuel in the oil wouldn't I smell it?

Yeah, can you smell it? Maybe your rings are toast. Just curious what oil are you running?

That would lead me to believe rings instead of something fuel related, which wouldn't be good news. Dunno, I would have a mechanic look at it. If it is rings a heavier weight could help a bit.

No tailpipe smoke?

I have not noticed any smoke. I'm going to pull 8 of the plugs and inspect. Also I'm going to do a leak down test, I'll post back once I have results.

Sorry for the late update, I've been busy at work. I pulled 8 of the spark plugs, they look good to me.

Could excessive idling cause the oil to be a darker color?
