I have an "in bed" (below rail) tool box right now. Really like it. But it takes up quite a bit of my bed length, turning a 6'4" bed into a 4" bed. With the tailgate down, my "Pond Prowler" 10' boat is hanging about 4 feet past the end of the tailgate. Not exactly the safest setup.

So I want to remove that toolbox to gain back that 2+ feet of room. My boat would only be hanging about 2' past the tailgate this way.

But I need room for my tools and a small portable hydraulic floor jack (which I carry all the time). I'm looking through "wheel well" or "pork chop shaped" tool boxes that go along the side. I want something that will stay below the rails, and preferably be black (to avoid unnecessary attention).

Everything I'm finding is either super cheap (and flimsy thin aluminum or plastic) or extremely expensive. There doesn't seem to be an "in between" - something mid-priced, but decent enough quality to deter a quick-look/touch from a thief. I grabbed the lid of one the other day and just gave a slight tug, and it flexed easily enough in my hands that I know a thief would be in it in seconds.

Is there anything available, or is this a lost cause?

All the best,
Glenn

For those who have the swing case how hard is it to access the contents while it's swung in. Looks like the lip of the box would be in the way.

As another option though I haven't seen anybody making them. What about getting 2 bars that go across the box in the stake pockets. Keep all the box space, slide the boat all the way forward and not as high and awkward as having ladder racks. Would be more like sled deck height, but cheaper than a sled deck.might have to be custom, but would allow you to weld on some pads or rollers to keep the boat secure and undamaged like a boat trailer and simple enough that it would need minimal fab and materials.my thought is 2 rails across the box and 2 rails that pin in lengthwise with rollers at the back and pads at the front for easy load/unload. Ratchet straps to hold it down so it's easy install/removal.

I watched the video and read the description, but I’m not seeing this: I see it’s removable. Can it be locked in place so someone doesn’t remove it and walk off with the whole box while I’m out fishing?

I avoided “plastic” in my original search. Is this heavier duty than the thin aluminum boxes?

All the best,
Glenn

It will not open with it locked in place, you need to swing it away from the bed side to gain access.

When the case is in the “secured” position you can run a lock thru the hole mount attached to the side of the bed a lock the case in place.

Thank you all for the replies. I ordered a drivers side Swing Case tonight. If I like it and need more room, I’ll order the passenger side box next.
All the best,
Glenn

B2CD29F7-3E51-4542-8E59-2F374DC43DF4.jpeg Swing-Case came in last night. It looks good, but they didn’t include the fasteners to bolt it to the truck, so I sent an email to the company I bought from. Hoping to hear something back today. If not, does anyone have an idea of the fasteners sizes?
All the best,
Glenn

You may benefit from a RamBox bed swap if the tool box doesn't work out.

I wish. That's what I originally wanted, but they didn't have the Sport, 6'4" bed Rambox. If they did, I'd have bought it back then. Way too cost prohibitive though. The Swing-Case looks like it will work out fine. Just waiting on the fasteners to get here now. I really wish they had just replied, "We use XX self-tapping screws, and the nuts are XX." I would have just went to Lowes and bought some already. Box is sitting in the garage. Still waiting on the screws / nuts.

All the best,
Glenn

Yeah I vote for the swing case looks strong and will be out of the way of the bed.

Stronger looking / feeling than I anticipated. I held it up in the spot it's going to go, and it looks like it will work out great. I just need to install it. Now would be the perfect time... stuck at home.

Glenn
