Hey guys, my truck has 3.21 gears but I'm wanting to swap to 3.92. I'm a Mustang guy so swapping the ring and pinion is a common thing on those cars. Does anyone know if these Ram trucks are the same? Can I just buy a 3.92 ring and pinion set and have it installed? My truck is a 2wd btw. 5.7 hemi 8 spd auto.

Hey Mike. Your 2WD will be similar to swapping rear end gears in anything else.

I think you'll really like 3.92s. And I want to hear all about it when it's finished.

Call Matt@Moes. He's a great guy and will get you going in the right direction.

If yours is a shortbed, (I don't know what a Harvest Edition is) be sure to tell Matt. He'll tell you what to expect with your driveshaft.

Thanks! Yes it's the crew cab short bed.

Why not 4.10??? You know you wanna...

He might, but I believe 3.92 is a good compromise for an all-around 1500. I know I've been happy with mine. I also believe it'll do everything I'll need it to do for awhile to come...now if I towed or ran with it loaded a lot (and lived in someplace hilly), 4.10s would probably be just the thing!

You're good on the driveshaft then,it's only the regular cab shortbox 2 wheel drive trucks that have the driveshaft issue.
That's good news! What about a tune after the gears are installed? Do these trucks require a tune or does the computer re-teach after its driven a while?

I'm going to take a step backwards, unless I missed it somewhere in this thread, you never said what your expectations were. Are you looking for faster acceleration, are you going to drag race, if so, are you going to race 1/4 mile or 1/8 mile, are you going to add other bolt on mods, do you tow often, have you considered a higher stall torque converter? The difference between 3.92's and 4.10's is minimal, but if your racing, depending on your other future mod's, the difference may have an effect on your top end. Without knowing your plans, my guess would be 3.92's for everyday street driving, 4.10's for the 1/4 mile and 4.56's for racing 1/8 mile.

I'm not planning to race. Just wanting to have better acceleration. I also do 95% city driving, hardly no hwy so with these 3.21 gears, I'm getting around 12-13 mpg. If I'm going to get that low of gas mileage, might a well have a little seat in the pants experience when I hit the accelerator :D

OK--My suggestion would be either 3.92's or 4.10's. You might also consider a Pedal Commander. You can get either from Moe's Performance along with the install kit. There are numerous threads about the PC. Matt is a preferred vendor on this site.

Mike, I like the way you think!

I can remember only 1 or 2 guys, out of Many, that have regretted getting rid of 3.21s. At least on of those guys was running tiny little drag tires.

Most guys are really happy with the (non earth shattering) results. You'll never recoup any money spent on 3.92s or 4.10s, but some guys report BETTER MPG around town after gears.

Guarantee there will be a smile on your face, and a faint whiff of burnt rubber.
