So i am in the California Drought and have a 275g tote, as of right now i fill it full to the brim with recycled water. at 8.3lbs per gallon i am sitting right around 2300lbs of water in the bed of my truck. According to the hand book im rated at 1550, should i reduce the amount of water i fill up with? My tote is loaded twards the cab and over the axle.

Not a simple question. There are a number of reasons why you should always stay under the max, whether you are towing, hauling, or carrying in the bed.
1. The maximum weight is what the truck has been designed to accommodate safely, or at least within the design parameters of the truck. This includes braking effectiveness, suspension articulation, roll control, traction, etc.
2. The weight, depending on how it is calculated, does not include passenger weight, spare tire, optional equipment, the toolbox under your seat etc.
3. Warranty can be affected by your failure or ignorance of the weight limitations of your vehicle. If you are 1000 pounds overweight and try to get something fixed under warranty, they could easily deny it as you exceeded the manufacturer's recommendations.
4. This is probably the one that people ignore the most. If you get in an accident while being that much overweight, you will most likely be charged criminally, and will likely loose your insurance coverage.

The safest and best thing you can do would be stay within the limits. That being said, if you understand what the costs and concerns are of choosing another option, that's your call.

The easiest way to accomplish what you want is get a little trailer just a 5-800 dollar 5x8 with a 3500lb axle keeps you legal and honestly if you haven't used little trailers they are life savers from time to time... Worth every penny

That much water and overweight on highway and streets. Nah. Don't. Water is a dynamic load. It will have its way with you and there are other motorists to consider. If it were farm roads or backroads I would ask why you're on here asking- shouldn't you be trying to figure out how to fit more in?

Not to sound like I am giving you a load of sarcastic, I would just rent a small U-Haul Trail to haul it in. Then when you can add heavy springs or a set of airbags, or for that matter purchase a small trailer, I would be careful.

I don't think they would help you be legal on weight but they would make it handle better and would level it out. I have a friend that has a water tank in the back of his 2500 GMC ? Maybe it's a Chevy , but he has airbags. When he has the tank in the back of his truck they level with the air bags. They use it to water horses on their ranch

Air bags will only help level you load won't increase your capacity. If you were to put 2300 lbs in your bed you would exceed the axles rateings. Airlift 1000 are good to 1000 lbs but the airlift 5000 is good for 5k but you still shouldnt put 2300 back there you will definitely exceed your axles and your tires at that point. Also someone stated that when hauling liquids it's a completely different game with the slosh. If you do it good luck to you and I hope it works out but I really think you should get a small trailer, trailers are worth every penny and then some.

OP this is good advice ^

If you're hauling that much get a trailer. Airbags are great but I wouldn't want that kind of weight in my box! Plus with that much weight in the back you'll burn through rear tires like nobody's business!

not sure about US laws but here if it's farm you can basically ignore all weight ratings as long as the load is farm related. of course that doesn't mean it's safe or that it won't cause any damage so i wouldn't go too crazy

im going to be the odd one out here. ive put over 2300lbs in my truck before. it will do it. its not something i would recommend doing on the regular but if all you have to do is go 4 miles i would do it, but thats just me. just be careful about it. obviously a trailer is the better way to go, no argument there.
