Is there a 20" rim that will work with the spare tire winch?

The original spare tire on the 2012 I gave my son is dry rotted and I wouldn't trust it. I plan to get him some tires for his birthday anyway, is there a 20" rim that will mount on the spare tire winch so he can keep one of the current good-but-getting-low-tread tires as his new spare?

The centercap size on the wheel is kind of important. It needs to be big enough for the spare tire hanger to fit through. On a steel wheel it's not really an issue(no center cap hole to worry about) but on an alloy it could be.

Thats the hub size, ie hub centric ring. All the same across the Gen4's, steel and alloy. My factory spare is a 17" black alloy with 33" tire.

If you don't understand the question then just say so. It's NOT just the hub centric diameter. Aluminum wheels also choke down the center hole for specific center caps. IE my factory forged limited wheel doesn't fit the spare tire location due to the center cap hole being too small to fit the carrier plate thru the hole.

To answer doc's question, I'm not sure if there's a 20" aluminum wheel with a big enough center bore. But they do make a 20" steel spare that he could mount his matching tire too.

Look at the center hole on the steel spare and the limited wheel. The hub bore is the same. But the face has a small diameter to fit the center cap.

Regardless to the wheel & tire combo, it’s is the Overall diameter which you are limited to….. as mentioned above as well :waytogo:

Thanks, at least you got the question. I'm not asking what tire size fits in the space, I'm asking if there's a rim COMPATIBLE WITH THE WINCH like it says in the title. I need a 20" rim for him to put a 20" tire on, but the OEM alloy rim will not allow the cross bar part of the winching mechanism to fit through the center hole of the tire.

Do you happen to know the part number on that 20" steelie?

I think this is the original 20" spare. Unfortunately the website isn't the greatest about information so it doesn't specifically state it's the 20" but the photo looks like the 20" as the 17" is the one I posted previously with the 5 windows.

Another option is www.car-part.com to see what local salvage yards have.

Don't quote me on this, but i think that might be the rim for the 18" Temporary spare. It uses an oddball sized 18" tire that matches the diameter of the 275 /60/20's

Possible, it's about impossible to cross reference off the allmoparparts site without using another site to get more info from the part number.

Here's a link to one from road ready wheels. I *think* I used them to get a matching limited wheel for a spare but I'm not for sure on that.

Yeah, the original spare for the Express is the 18" with the tire matching the overall diameter of the 20" rim. I found some 20" spares but they were 6 lug. @Bandit517 found one I found as well, I note it says 2013-2018 but why would a 2012 not use the same rim? There's no difference I'm aware of so not sure why the website limited it to those years.

If I had to guess, it has to do with the change over from "(Make)Dodge (Model)Ram 1500" to "(Make)Ram (Model)1500". Just a technicality. Again with part numbers/cross referencing nightmares, Road Ready doesn't show a part number, but the 2012 wheel looks the same. And specd out the same as the 13+ at 20x8.

My 2013 Sport has 20" wheels, and had a 17 or 18" spare wheel and the temp spare tire with the taller tire. I wanted a steel 20" spare wheel, and a matching size tire. I located a salvage yard that dealt in used wheels and found a 20 " steel wheel. I believe the 3rd gens that came with the 20" wheels, had the 20" steel spare, and it works fine with the spare tire winch.

I wonder if it might have to do with when the lug nuts changed from SAE to Metric

**** I forgot about that. So maybe the lug hole diameter don't match. But seems like an easy enough fix.

I looked at other sizes from the same maker and the steelies vary on their listing. Some are 2004-2012 but others are 2009-2021 or even 1994-2019. Only the aluminums are 2013+. I don't think the lug nuts would be the difference. I may just need to email them and seek clarification because they don't list a 20" at all on their own page, only various 17" and 18".

Mine are, because I have Fuel’s and the spare is OEM.

I carry separate lugs for the spare just for that reason.

I had a 18" temporary spare. I had also had a flat on one of my regular tires that couldn't be repaired so one tire was much newer that the other 3. So when I was going to get new tires I bought a matching used 20" chrome clad wheel on ebay and put the one slightly used tire on it and bought 4 new ones for the original wheels. I had to bore out the center hole to get the cable through it but now I've got a full size spare that matched the other wheels.

I believe that many Wheel/Rim sellers do not know that ever since Dodge Rams went from using a 1/2" Lug to the 9/16ths Lug.

They just post what they do know works, instead of doing research

The Steel Wheels/Rims usually have a different Center BORE than the Alloy Rims

I have always thought that the black thing that fits into the wheel, could be modified in some way to hold an Alloy Rim securely in place.

Tires on the ground are 20"

If you look closely, the spare tire is plainly marked that it is a Temporary Tire

The Class 4 Tow Hitch comes close to touching the spare tire
