I have a 2016 Ram 1500 4x4 Hemi. 2.5” RC level front with Tuf Truck 1.5” 50% variable rate towing springs. 35x12.5r20 oem sport wheels. 62,586 miles

ok, specs out of the way.

I was changing my oil yesterday and noticed these rust trails coming from my differential where the CV axles are.

Is this normal or am I about to be out a lot of money?

The mud is from my work, I work for a concrete company and drive in to the quarry to park every day.

The oil on the CV axle is from me, not the axle.

Is there a lot of play between the CV joint and the stub shaft it goes to?
If so it could be bad. all that keeps water from between the stub shaft and CV joint is an oring. Usually they need new halfshafts and stub shafts.
The left side isnt so bad but the right side the stub shaft isnt available through Chrysler, you will need a complete axle and both halfshafts.
Stupid design, common failure.
Im not sure why chrysler doesn't sell the right side stub shaft, maybe aftermarket does?

It won’t let me attach the video of the movement in the shaft.

THANK YOU!

If the passenger side is damaged you'll need an aftermarket piece which this company in Canada makes, thanks goodness for the aftermaket otherwise i'll be a new complete front diff assembly which the suckers at Mopar charge 2-3 times more for the same damn thing when you have 3.92's

Check out my build thread. I've documented the drivers side replacement, and ill be doing the passenger side with that kit ram1500rsm posted. I've attached the part numbers you'll need.

That being said, don't panic its not an end of the world situation. Just leads to minor vibrations on the highway and worn out parts. If there's rust dust, its already too late.

At minimum I would slide that shaft off because most likely the oring and circlip are loose and failing. Easy to slide a new oring, grease it up, and slide a new circlip on and you'll feel the nice tight difference before it gets too loose.
