Hello, so i’m new here and i’m wondering if i could get some advice with my truck.

I got a hand-me-down 2013 RAM 1500 with the 4.7l and 6 speed auto i think, not sure. Anyways, it was my dads truck and he never took care of it, and now it’s my problem to deal with.

One of the issues is that the engine ticks at start, but then it almost completely goes away once it reaches operating temp. I’ve read it could be manifold bolts, so i’m not very worried about it.

Truck has almost 104K on it, and it’s doing things i didn’t notice in my past vehicle, which is the rpms jumping before it shifts. it goes up in rpms, then it stops increasing, the RPMs jump and it shifts into the next gear after. The shifts usually are pretty nice, sometimes they’re pretty hard, but that’s to be expected i guess. I’ve checked the fluid, and it’s good and up to the correct level, and it’s been replaced every 40K miles. I took a video of it but it doesn’t seem to show nicely in the video because of bumps in the road.

Also, i don’t know if this has anything to do with anything, but the trans overheats pretty easily at idle in either park or drive doesn’t matter. And when it heats up it shifts pretty softly and not firm like when it’s cold.

I’m very new to this, so any help or advice would be appreciated. Also, there’s a pretty loud tap when the truck shifts from around 2nd gear to 3rd. I can upload the previously mentioned video if need be. Thanks!

When you say the trans overheats at idle, what temps do you see in the instrument cluster?

Also, for the potential exhaust leak, when the engine is cold, take a look at the heat shields and see if any bolts have broken and are missing their heads. Try and wiggle the heat shields too.

For the trans shifting issues, I would connect a scan tool and look at the CVI's, or Clutch Volume Index, and record the numbers. Then I would perform a Quick Learn and record the CVI's again and then drive it.

The CVI's are a measurement of how much fluid it takes to apply a particular clutch.

The trans can get up to 180-190 in park, and in drive the highest i’ve seen it is 170 so far. I don’t have a tool capable of reading the CVI values, but i have a tool capable of working with AlfaOBD. If i hit the gas a bit at idle the temp drops pretty drastically too. During driving the trans cools quick, with it only running at around 115-120 at 50°F.

I might’ve found the source of the “trans” issues, in which i was just driving and the truck started to drag majorly with cruise control on and i looked down to the gas mileage page thing and i was getting around 11mpg going on flat ground, and the next second it went back to normal which is around 20mpg. I’ve noticed that the truck feels sluggish as of recent, and so i went under and looked at the brakes and discovered the front left caliper is missing a bottom screw, and this explains the 2-4 click and all the clicks and rattles i’ve been experiencing as of recent.

I think it’s a sticking brake.
