I am looking at the Kenwood Excelon KFC-XP6903C to replcae my front door and dash speakers.

In a chat with someone from Crutchfield he told me the 6x9 would not fit due to depth. Then I read 6 reviews of people putting them in 1500s and one 3500 of various model years that make no mention of a fit issue. On top of that Kenwood's site says they will fit.

I am inclined to believe they will fit but was curious if anyone here has 1st hand experience with these speakers fit and performance when driven by the stock 8.4 head unit?

They fit! I have the exact same set. They’re actually vehicle specific to our trucks. That’s crazy someone at Crutchfield would give you BS information. I ordered them through crutchfield.

Something didn't smell right about the fit issue when I was chatting with Crutchfield. How do they perform? Did you add them to a stock system?

Sorry for the delay! I haven’t been on in a few days. I installed them on a stock system. They sounded much better than the stock originals. I later replaced the head unit & added an amp and now they sound fantastic!

This is what i put in my truck and the sound is amazing... The guy who installed it said he can't believe the power the stock head unit puts out. I don't have a sub in and really actually don't need one as it pushes out a deep base already bit in time i will..
This far exceeded my expectations!!!

My buddy is in the shop right now getting this all put in

For those with the Kenwood fronts, what did you do in the rear? I see two Kenwood options, 4 way vs 5 way. Price is obviously not an issue between the two but wasn't sure if anyone had first hand experience with either.

Did you have to cut wires or use an adapter harness?

I went with the Kenwoods in the front and some Kicker 3-way 6x9s in the rear. Here is my summary:

Front speakers: physically the Kenwoods fit great and were easy to install but the 3.5 dash speakers are 4 ohm and the stock ones are 8 ohm. The mid and high output of the Kenwoods is so much that it is overwhelming. I contacted Crutchfield and they told me the impedance difference wouldn't cause any harm to the head unit but other than that they had no suggestions. I also asked them about adding a 4 ohm resistor and they said it probably wouldn't change the sound and wasn't needed. I installed 4 ohm resistors anyhow and didn't notice any change in the sound. I have to run the mid and high settings on my system EQ all the way negative to make it tolerable. I have reached out to Kenwood but they have not responded. I am considering putting the stock 3x5s back in until I work out another plan. Frustrating to spend $200+ on speakers to have this kind of problem.

Rear speakers: they are too good for the build quality of the rear doors. The speakers sound great but it is hard to tell with all the rattling in the doors. I've adjusted the balance forward some to overcome the rattling in the rear doors from the bass. Anyone know what rattles in the rear doors? I did some investigating when I had the door panels off and couldn't figure out exactly what was rattling; my best guess was the window channel. The front doors don't rattle much at all.
