Haven't opened my glove box for (apparently) six months. I went to put the new auto insurance card in the glove box and found several dried-up leaves. How in the heck can leaves get into the glove box?

I really don’t know, but my thought is the cabin air filter behind the glovebox. I’d check to make sure the cover is in place.

I can check that out, but how can leaves get through the grill on the cowling at the base of the windshield? These leaves are intact, full sized leaves.

I pulled the glove box door out and looked behind it. Didn't see anything amiss. Can't see how leaves could get into my (lower) glove box. Reinstalled the glove box door. Guess I'll see if it happens again.

Maybe the leaves could have slipped through vertically through the cowl?

The fan motor is behind the glove box. If you have a cabin air filter, that is also where the filter will be accessed. If the filter is absent, or the door is loose, the leaves may be blow'n in the wind.

Open the lower glove box, squeeze in the sides at the back and it'll roll down and come out in your hands. If something is loose or missing you'll know right away when you look in there.

Once again I was placing the insurance card in my glove box and I saw leaf fragments in there. My 3/36 warranty is up on Monday. I called to make an appointment to have the dealer look into the mystery of the leaves in the glove box. When they said they needed the vehicle for the whole day as they might need to pull apart the dash I told them to forget it.

I pulled my cabin air filter and boy, was it filthy. Yes, I park underneath a tree, a crabapple tree. I cleaned the filter best I could and reinstalled it. I will monitor it and see if I get any leaves in there again. It might take until next fall though. Meanwhile, I will replace the cabin air filter with a new one.

I'm not a professional mechanic, though I did stay at a Holiday Inn. However my advice would be not to park under that crabapple tree, and your issue will leave.

As you can see, there is nothing that stops the leaves from going all the way down to the HVAC Fan & that will only break the leaves up & then they will plug up the condensor

When you have the Cabin Air Filter installed, it stops the leaves from reaching the fan.

I can only guess at a possible semi fix.
Remove the cowl & use something like mesh with 1/4" square holes in it & stretch it over the underside of the cowl.
That would stop the larger stuff from getting into the HVAC box.
It would need cleaning out every once in a while.
Another thing would be to remove the cover off the bottom of the fan & clean everything up inside of that area.
I don't know if you can access the face of the condensor from there.

Where i live there is an Olive Tree & those leaves are smaller in size & i bet that they fit easily through those slats in the cowl

I will be looking down into my cowl to see if there is anything that stops leaves from going into the HVAC unit

I just had the dealership install a Cabin Air Cleaner into my 2016 early model Ram
That had to cut the HVAC box to insert the filter & the door, that was 2 weeks ago

So i ran my Ram without a Cabin Air Filter for over 5 years without a CAF
The condensor likely is already blocked & i am lucky that i still get a good blast of cold air through the vents

The filter clogging is unsurprising, but leaves in the glove box sounds like critters starting a nest or somewhere under the dash above the glovebox there's a hole in the ductwork. That could be something warranty covered, but also potentially critter caused. I'd set some traps before I did anything else.

Once again...

Glove-Box-Leaves-100323.jpg

Don't think it's mice or chipmunks. However, it is interesting that there are oak tree leaves in the mix and the nearest oak tree is across the street in the neighbors back yard, so I'm not ruling it out. I pulled the glove box out and there were some leaves scattered in the area behind it. My cabin air filter was filthy but undamaged by rodent gnawing. I don't understand how the leaves can be intact.

I opened the hood and there were leaves crammed into the vent grills and all along the base of the windshield. I cleared those out.

I remember cleaning out the glove box this spring when I did the semi-annual deep clean. There were just fragments of leaves in there. This is what has accumulated in the past 5 months or so, probably in the past month since trees were not shedding leaves until recently.

Nobody can be messing with me as my truck is locked 24/7 unless I'm in it.
