So I barely got a chance to drive my new 2013 RAM 2500 truck before a check engine light came on...

Went back to the dealer the next day (today), it's in service now.. they said it would take a few hours!?

New truck and this is what I get? Any experience as to what's up? They said it's "mostly computer flash stuff, but might need to get a couple of parts". What!? A couple of parts? On a new truck?

Beyond shocked and disappointed :-( Maybe I'm over reacting?

yes i would be pissed. i was also ask for a free warranty.

on a side note as an engineer myself i see failures. these are mass produced, by MANY MANY vendors. chrysler only does the final assembly. everything that is mass produced has its issues.

If the light wasnt on before you test drove it im sure the dealer had no clue about it. keep in mind that everything in these trucks are controlled by some sort of computer. one little glitch can trip a CEL.

I just can't imagine they would ever give a free warranty... I really doubt it? What leverage do I even have at this point, nothing really... truck is paid for. It would obviously give me peace of mind, and I will try, but I'm already going into this pretty convinced they will not even consider it.

And yes, the light was not on when I test drove it etc.

We'll see what the extent of the service/repairs is at the end of today. Thanks for the responses. I was just so excited to get into this thing, and now dealing with this a day later... and this was supposed to be my long-term purchase, like 10+ years I don't want to even look at another truck!

Ask for a price on an extended warrantee and ask them to split it with you. All they can say is no. Would actually benefit them too if the truck turns out to have some problems. they won't have to just eat it.

Expected, its a 2013 (which is a re-designed model) and they probably want to service the common problems which arrived after the new 2013s were released. Probably some flashes and upgrades, I know some had electrical issues so maybe new wiring harnesses. Stuff like that.

I know some people had the CEL a short time after they bought their 2013s. I wouldnt sweat it man... be luckily you got a badass truck and a dealership willing to fix all the common future problems you might encounter down the road

It could be something as simple as a loose gas cap. I know someone who bought a new truck and same thing only a day or 2 had a cracked fitting In the eval system. Things happen unfortunately but I would be upset also just hopefully they take care of you and make your warranty experience better than mine. I got a "new service manager that didn't know what he was doing"

Yea fingers crossed for sure that this is just a small hiccup.

On a a side note, there is no gas cap... says it's "capless". That was actually the first thing I checked!

You are over-reacting. A brand new truck can have issues, that's why they have warranties. Hundred upon hundreds of parts and pieces, you cannot expected them to always function properly with each other. Yes, it's dis-heartening, but hopefully it's a one and done kind of deal.

You can be pissed all you want, it's probably at the wrong people. It was probably Fred at the end of his shift on Friday that forgot to torque that bolt. That's what warranties are for. Just glad they're gettin' it fixed for ya. If it was a faulty part, better to catch it now than after your warranty is up or you install a mod they could try and blame it on.

That is exactly why we have warranties like cruizer is sayin. Most states have lemon laws as well. A good dealer will give you a loaner or at least try and make it right above the cost to fix it. Good luck.

it's most likely minor but when it's done you should ask exactly what the problem was

My CTD threw a cel in the first 1500k miles, they had to replace a nox sensor for the def. Have not had any issues since.
You just have to work through a few gremlins.
Good luck.

When I was shopping for my new ram, the first one I test drove had the check engine light on and was running rough. And on top if that, the tailgate had scratches all over it because they had the truck backed into tree branches. Needless to say, I didn't buy that truck or anything from that dealer.

Yeah, I say relax as it looks like they're taking care of you. It's when they try and weasel out of fixing it and turning the blame on you. Stuff happens and you're going have an exhausting ownership if you let stuff bother you this much.

on the move..

My check engine light came on during the ride home from the dealership.

Turns out my buddy Keith didn't tighten the gas cap all the way when pumping my complimentary first tank.

Moral of the story... the check engine light isn't always something to get upset about.

Well they didn't have time to fix anything yesterday.... so it's back at the dealer again today for them to try and fix.... hopefully there is some progress today!

While I was driving it yesterday, had another message come up that said "Service DEF System See Dealer" so we'll see what happens with that as well.

It's mostly frustrating because this is the 5th new vehicle I have, and the first time ever that I'm having these sorts of issues. All my other ones were Toyota, Nissa, Subaru so maybe that's different too but, yea never really had any lights or issues or anything at all come up right out of the dealership!

Anyhow.. it is what it is so I'll wait it through and find out what the issue was. Will keep this updated once I have more info :)

So latest update... They didn't know how to fix the computer etc and apparently made things worse now they have to contact Chrysler HQ to get proper flash codes to fix everything.... I'm in a rental until they fix it, supposedly Monday or Tuesday.

My truck spent countless days in service at stealer after I picked up. It's ****** but the quality control lacks a slight bit at some auto plants and suppliers.
I just beat the crap out of the loaners they gave me. I hammered the dart for 4 days HARD, cost me 14 bucks in gas...lol
