Complete lifting and leveling n00b here, last thing I "lifted" was pumping 120PSI into air shocks on the back of a 77 LTD.

So that being said the truck in my sig looks way too stock, I thought for a while it would look better with the front end up a little. Would that be "leveling"?

I already have to replace sway links because one is busted so I'm going into the front end this spring if my head gasket trip turns out good. Would be a good time to bring the front end up.

Need some basics or a link to a similar article, thanks-

2wd or 4wd? if 2wd then you would need coil spacers, if it's 4wd you can just crank the torsion bars to level it out.

4 and it does have torsion bars. Does it need to be done by a frame shop or is a tape measure on level ground sufficient?

Thanks

Find some level ground, put the front on stands, adjust the bars, take it for a spin, remeasure, and adjust accordingly. Don't forget longer shocks and an alignment afterwards.

That was my next question. I figure 2" will be enough for mine if not too much, I thought the shocks had enough travel for that.

Thank you all for the responses.

Yea they should be long enough for 2" or you could replace your shocks with adjustable shocks like the bilstein 5100's and get a leveling kit and a smoother ride since you're tearing the front apart anyway and getting it aligned

Most any manufacturer will have a longer shock for your application. Summit racing breaks it down for you, if you want a longer/shorter or stock length shock for your application.

They do have enough travel, but instead of operating in the middle range of the travel you'll now be operating in the extended range of operation. Say when parked the shock is at the mid point of it's range. It can extend 3" and retract 3". Once you raise the truck 2" the shock is now operating with 5" of retraction and 1" of extension.

No tearing apart the front end to get it aligned, it's a pretty simple adjustment. The 5100's that you are thinking of are an entirely different set-up then what he needs and can use. The 5100's you are thinking of are an adjustable strut for coil sprung trucks (06+). He has a torsion bar suspension that uses a shock.
