My stock 20x8 clad wheels are okay, always wanted a black rim and just wasn't in the cards at the time of my lease agreement. I'm looking at a 20x9 black rim and thinking that I should get some summer grippy tires for those rims, then Swap back to the clad for the winter with the stock goodyears.

Rims will cost $685. Cheapest route would be to swap over the stock 275s which will run me maybe $25ish per wheel so maybe $100. But then I couldnt swap to the clads for winter and the salt in NJ would kill the rims quickly probably. So I was looking at a fatter shorter profile tire like a 285/50R20 but not sure how that would fit on a 20x9 rim, or even the stock 275 on a 9" rim. Wider is always better for grip in the summer. I also know changing tire height will mess with the speedo but that could be fixed with a tuner lol... ugh.

Truck is a stock height 2014 express crew cab.

What are your recomendations? Any pics of the shorter profIle fat tires on these rams?

I think I would go with a 305/50-20.

I don't have any other pics, but these chrome clads are 20x9 and the tires look fine on it. I'd go with 305/50's, but the 285/50 looks good too.

A 285/50/20 is going to look awkward on a stock height truck. That tire only measures 30", so you are going to have a lot of fender gap. I would go with a 305/50/20 myself on a 9" wheel.

This really help me picture the new tire size. Enter your existing size and then the size(s) you are considering and compare the width, diameter, height, speedo changes, etc.:

Def go 305/50 over 285/50 as long as your offset on the new wheels will allow.

So a 305 tire will clear the stock 14 ram at stock height? I know I said 285/50R20 but would I be better off with a taller sidewall since its stock height? What do you guys recomend?

The rim has a +10 offset I believe and its 20x9 5x139.70 bolt pattern. I know the stock rim had more offset so will this be a problem? Less offset and a wider rim/tire?

I think you may be confused on the metric tire sizing system. The first number is the width of the tire in millimeters. The second number is the aspect ratio (the percentage of height in relation to width). A 285/50-20 is going to be shorter and 10mm wider than the stock tires. I think it would look funny on a stock truck.

No I get that. My only thing is that besides a 305/50R20 there are no performance options for a tire with a taller sidewall or "aspect ratio". I've seen 305/55R20 tires but mostly off road type tires.

I'm basically just verifying whats a good tire size for looks on a stock height truck with 20x9 rims with a +10 offset. They don't have to be short sidewall but that's all I see as a more performance tire.

They also have 295/50-20. Little taller than a 285/50 and less than 305/50. Im not sure about what fits with what offsets, but from what i see stock trucks should be fine with 20x9 wheels and 305/50's. Its when you get 20x10's. Thats when you may have to run a small spacer up front. Whats the stock offset of our wheels anyway? Do you have any plans of lowering anytime soon?

I thought they were around +13-18 offset.

So your saying the 305/50R20 is taller than the 285/50R20?

I might be doing a small drop like a 2/3 or 2/4 drop. But not anytime soon, and not before I get new rims.

Yes 305/50's are taller than the 285/50's. As you can see in Davids picture its a 32" tall tire. Stock tires are 33" tall. The 285's are about 31 1/4" tall. So not only are the 285's a lot shorter, they will mess with your speedo until you get a tuner. I know that the sizes don't make any damn sense because both tires should be the same height since they are both 50's, but the tire calculator David put up is damn useful. Lets you compare tire differences and really get a good prediction of what you will get when you order.

Stock offset on the 20s is +19
and +10 offset wheel is going to push the wheel out 10mm

A 305/50 will be taller than a 285/50 because not only is the section width wider, it in turns makes the overall height taller. It's more rubber.

The section width and aspect ratio correlate with each other.

I can tell you a 295/50 and 305/50 should with a +10 offset. Also the stock chrome clads I JD on my big horn were 20x9 with the stock 275's. +19mm offset and I had 305/55 off-road tires but the side bitters rubbed the sway bar at full lock so a 305/50 with + 10 will give you over 1/4 of extra room.
