Looking for recommendations on Canopy/Shell

I am looking for cheap solutions for secure, dry, taller than bed rail storage in my 5'7" bed.

There are no used shells on FB Market, Craigslist, etc. around here (La Center/Amboy, Washington).

I have a couple options:
1. Custom build a lumber rack and add solid, hinged sides to enclose
a. this will be slow, and likely relatively expensive
2. Buy a new shell/canopy
a. this will likely be expensive as far as pricing I have seen so far.

I am looking to spend $1,000-$1,500.

Color is of no concern to me. Crew Cab, Short Bed. I plan to be able to sleep in the bed for short camping trips, wife and me only. Both 5'10" so will have to figure out a solution for that too....

Look at the hard tri fold from @OEDRO they’ve got some good cheap tonneau covers. Around $200
And we both know that Nick @gotexhaust has some awesome bed covers also.

Don’t loose hope. They pop up for sale but go quick when they do. Keep your eyes out and call all the used cap places

I called when mine popped up 15 minutes after the guy posted it. He said 6 other people called within the first hour and I was already on my way to pick it up.

I looked for 9 months but had a $500 budget that I told myself I wouldn't go over. I saw about 1-2 a month pop up searching a 2 hour radius and every one of them went fast. I only plan to use it 2 weeks a year

Maybe I am searching wrong, but I am not seeing any Toppers, Canopies, or Camper Shells on ebay for the ram within 500 miles of 98629...

Any new place sells used, Most car auction places take them off (That's usually the ones that pop up on craigslist) There are a couple places around me that claim to be used topper places but when you drive an hour or more to go there they try to sell you a new one. Most every one of them ask for your number and say they'll call if one turns up. Also if you see a guy on craigslist that seems to be selling a lot of them reach out to them even if they don't have one for your truck yet

What about a canvas style topper? Might be the ticket for your needs.

Been toying with that idea...will look into it....just not sure how durable the canvas is....I like foresty trails...

Be patient and keep searching - try searching your area for
“Ram shell” or “Ram camper” - once you figure out the terms most commonly used in your area, you will hopefully find more leads.

There are normally a number of 6.5’ and 8’ shells available in most areas. The 5.7’ shells are a little less common, but should be available occasionally.

As someone mentioned, you might find a new shell dealer that offers gently preowned options as well, but you might need to go to Portland, Vancouver, or other larger city in your area, and you might need to really expand your search area a few hundred miles to include larger cities in the region.

Google camper shells/truck caps near me. I found a bunch of shops that dont really post them up for sale but sell caps originally purchased from them on consignment to sell.

Ended up with a leer 100xl that had a crack which leer replaced under their lifetime warranty with a brand new cap. Got a brand new cap for only the price of a used one at $600.

I found the silver one in January an hour away. Rough around the edges but did the trick and only cost $500. Took it off a few weeks ago (only wanted it for winter month) and put it for sale to see if I could make a few buck. Sold it 2 days later for $700.

Was watching the black one on kijiji. Asking $1200 which was more then I wanted to spend. Well the day after I sell the silver one, the black topper drops to $950. So I picked it up the next day. Color matched and in mint condition. If I sell my tonneau the new cap won't cost me anything out of pocket.

The 5.7's are definitely harder to find but be patient and keep looking regularly. One will pop up eventually

Show her after the fact, is she likes the item good for you, if she didn't now she has to research what to do to fix her taste. You're still trying to help by showing her your new truck cap in this instance
