i have a bad lower ball joint. Is it easier to replace the whole control arm or should I just replace the ball joint?
How long should I expect this to take?
Any custom tools needed?

Depends on how much you want to spend.

If you don't replace the control arm you'll need a ball joint press.

When I rebuilt the front end on the 03, we found that a new lower control arm with ball joint and control arm bushings installed, was cheaper than the parts and labor to replace those 3 parts. Used Moog. Handles like a new truck.

When I get the lower control arm am I going to need any special tools? Or can I get by with the basics?

If your ordering new pre loaded lower control arms, as I did. Simple nuts and bolts. The old one should come out of the frame mount pretty easy with standard tools. The castle nut on the ball joint should not be difficult. May need a pickle fork to break loose the ball joint stud. Your local parts store may lend you one if you get the parts from them.
I watched my tech do mine. He had the front end old parts stripped out in 45 min. Took him about hour and a half to put the new parts in.

I think YouTube has a video, Andy you’ll need the tools to release the tension on the bars.
