So, long story short, I had a Carven Progressive before. With our new house and neighbors, I removed the Carven due to the LOUD cold starts in the early A.M.

I put the oem muffler back on. However, I REALLY miss having a performance tone muffler!! I have been eyeing up the Magnaflow D-Fit 18" kit offered through Magnaflow. How would you rate the cold start sound? Is it going to be overwhelmingly loud? I have listened to YouTube videos, and most of the audio is poor and I can never get a good "feel" for true sound.

If you have any other recommendations, please feel free to let me know!! I have ZERO interest in performance, as this is a truck and my other vehicles take care of that need! I was also considering the Flowmaster 50HD direct fit option too...Thank you for any and ALL of Your help and guidance.

If you were considering the 50 series I'd look into either the 12388 or 12288 from MF. I have the 12388 on mine. Its a 24" muffler obv straight through glass pack... u get it. It sounds good at startup. My neighbors say they can hear it if they're awake but it never wakes them up and its not annoying at all. Its a little too quiet at idle... almost sounds stock. But under any acceleration it sounds deep throaty and great. I don't have much experience with the 18" because I don't have it but for me the 12388 24" is plenty

I would go with the Magnaflow over the flowmaster myself.

Might even look at a longer Magnaflow if you are after it being quiet but still louder than stock.
The 18" will definitely be a lot louder than the 24". Coming from someone with the 24" i think its plenty loud. If you want louder than stock I recommend the 24" if you want a lot louder than stock id recommend the 18". Imo the 18" is comparable to the 40 series FM while the 24" MF is better comparable to the 50 series FM. Both are loud but MF has a deeper, less tinny, throaty sound.

Thank you all for your help!... I decided to go ahead and order the Magnaflow 19439 D-Fit muffler assembly. I will see how it sounds after I receive it and get it installed... Fingers and toes are crossed, in hopes that I like the sound!

I knew someone that ordered that same muffler setup i think... it was a while ago but I’m pretty sure that was it. He said it wasn’t too loud, but it had an excessive drone at highway speeds. Good luck with it! And if i were you I’d keep the stock resonators on. If its not loud enough take them off but the resonators help a lot with drone. Good luck!

Yeah, I certainly WILL be keeping the resonators as is! I am sure it will drone, I EXPECT it to, I have no real concern with that. The Carven Progressive I had previously droned significantly. I just can't handle the stock sound, or lack thereof...

So I installed the Magnaflow D-Fit muffler 19439 (18") yesterday afternoon. It is a FANTASTIC muffler option, the fit and finish is top notch! Magnaflow really did their research to ensure a like OEM factory fit! The sound is EXCELLENT!!! The cold starts are a little bit louder and deeper than stock, but I don't see it being a problem at all. The sound is SPOT ON of what I was looking for. There is a little drone, at highway speeds, of course. But the drone is very tolerable, coming from a Carven Progressive where the drone was very excessive! ALSO, THE 4 cylinder (MDS) mode with the Carven, down right SUCKED!!! I can say that I cannot hear any difference from the stock muffler, to this Magnaflow, when the MDS kicks in down to 4-cylinders! The majority of the RPM cruising range is as quiet as the stock muffler, until you get on it, and then it is a FANTASTIC smooth and deep exhaust tone with a great "BASS" to it! Cruising on the freeway, YES, there IS drone...but it is NOT bad at all! I am VERY SATSIFIED with this product and purchase. AND...I was able to get it shipped (BRAND NEW) for only $293!

How does the cold start compare to the Carven? I had the Carven Progressive and it was insane in the morning... And what is the difference between the 19439 and the DOD18M setup?

Tell them to find an essential job or move to the nursing home.

Have you thought above an electric cutout for the push of a button increase in decibel level?

Hahahaha!

Yes, I have thought about installing an electric cutout, but with Wisconsin winters, and salt, I did not have much faith in that idea, for the long run...

Exactly, I had the Progressive too! It was NUTS on cold start...this Magnaflow has a nice BASS smooth burble on start-up...honestly I feel it is VERY similar to stock in the volule level at cold start, just a MUCH better sound. The reson I went with the actual Magnaflow brand over the Mufflex, was for ease of install. The Magnaflow setup has the same OEM relief cuts and cusout for the alignment pegs that the OEM muffler has. I read all kinds of people having to add extra relief cuts in their Mufflex setups, and I did not want to screw around with any of that.

So essentially the difference is one is branded magnaflow all the way and the other is the mufflex setup.

Correct, 19439 is a Magnaflow branded muffler setup, made completely by Magnaflow. The Mufflex setup is a Magnaflow brand muffler, with Mufflex extension tubes and hangers, assembled and manufactured by Mufflex. I just bought the Magnaflow branded muffler, because I expected a much better installation, fit, finish, and overall quality of the whole assembly. I was not disappointed at all!!! The quality of the hangers alone, to me, make the Magnaflow setup, a MUCH better option!

This is the Magnaflow 19439!
