Got my truck back. Running fine, alls well that ends well. Made a 650 mile trip last night, no issues. Went from 13-14 mpg to nearly 17 too.

Did I miss something , did you get your truck back ? New xsmn & tq. Converter ?
Did you ever fix the tick ? Was it exhaust bolts or a dry lifter ?

Yes, I got it back friday. Haven't had time to write a follow up yet. It did get a new t/c an trans.. however, it didn't turn out as I had hoped. I'll try getting around to writing about it later this evening.

Soo... I got my truck back from the dealer Friday..

As you may have already read, I originally took it in for a "tick" which is supposedly due to a broken exhaust manifold bolt that I have yet to replace and will explain why at the end of this post..

The tech found that I had a faulty t/c due to my throttle surging while maintaining a constant speed, at any given speed, providing my RPM's were around 1,400-1,700. (For those who may have the same symptoms in the future)

So my warranty company decided they wanted to pay to have a new trans put in as well, since it would be taken out in the process.. Sure, whatever floats their boat..

I got to the dealership Friday evening just before closing time to pick her up and I did what every person should do.. I crawled under it right there in the parking lot to check out the new hardware AND for any discrepancies.

I didn't want to leave until I was sure everything was sound (i.e. matching numbers, everything tight and no leaks). Everything seemed to be in order, so I signed the w/o papers and left..

:driver:

Pulled out on the highway and WOW! The throttle response and shifts were tighter than my ex 'ol lady.. which should be expected.

Then the :bs: began...

On my way out of town, less than 10 mins from leaving the dealership, the truck ever so lightly shuttered and I heard a vibration that lasted literally.. a half second.

My first thought was that I ran over something in the road..

It sounded much like those rumble strips you find when you pull up to bridge construction, where they have a stop light set up, because they have one lane on the bridge shut down. It felt and sounded exactly like that.

I looked in my mirror and didn't see anything, thought maybe it was coincidence, and that something was in the road, so I continued driving. I went through a few more lights, then got to the last light in town, and when it went green.. on my way I went..

I was accelerating normally and when I got up to around 40-45 my truck shifted from 3rd to 4th and the shutter/vibration happened again...

I looked in the mirror, and again... nothing... At this point I'm thinking.. Either strange coincidence, or there's something wrong.

So, as with any game of row-sham-bow.. best 2 out of 3 right?

Tie game..

It's a good 8 miles or so between towns with plenty of traffic. I was cruising along, about 60, and had to slow down a bit to 50 due to traffic, and noticed a different slight vibration.. this one being constant. It felt like something was out of balance.

Neither of these vibrations were there before I took it in..

I got to the first light in the next town.. The light went green.. got to around 40-45 and low an behold.. the first shutter/vibration happened again!!

:banghead:

I pulled off onto a side street and called the dealer..

I explained to the S/M exactly what I just told ya'll. He told me, "The tech didn't report anything of that nature when he took it on his test drive."

Go figure....

..But! I could kind of understand that, because.. even I thought that it was something in the road at first.. and we all know how, "Ignorance is Bliss" minded some techs can be. So I wouldn't have expected him to pick up on this vibration. At least not at first..

I basically told the S/M that, "Something clearly isn't right here." He told me to bring it back in Monday (12/21) and he'll have his tech take it out. I told him that "This first shutter/vibration doesn't happen all the time (which it really doesnt), sometimes it happens.. sometimes it doesnt. However, the constant vibration at 50 does."

Over the weekend, I've also noticed that between 40 and 45 the truck still surges. Maybe the t/c they put in was bad too?..

I don't think this dealership will be willing to let me drive their tech around till it decides it wants to show its ass.

Believe when the transmission was replaced the driveline(drive shaft) was not marked for orientation at both ends.

Sounds like the driveshaft is not clocked properly with transmission & differential.

The vibration is caused from the drive line out of balance or excessive runout.

A driveshaft can be balanced, but still cause vibration with excessive runout.

Driveshaft could have been dropped on the shop floor when it was removed from the vehicle.
The driveshaft could have been bent upon impact.

So after you go through all this, or pay someone else, what's to stop it from happening again?

this is a good question. Taking my 6.4 in next week to have this looked at.
Here is a video of mine. I'm guessing it might be the exhaust. Hoping it's not something worse. Not feeling great about my 2 month old truck sounding like this.

From what I can tell from the video, that doesn't sound like an exhaust leak to me...

I have to agree with Hemi395. It has that exhaust leak sound... BUT it sounds too much like a metallic thud.

The sound recorded in the video may sound a little different in person, but it still sounded like metal on metal. Let us know what you find out.

In case anyone was wondering.. No I haven't fixed the broken bolt yet. Been busy with work, the holidays and such. So she still ticks..

Also, because of everything that's been going on.. I haven't had the time to take the truck back to the dealer for this vibration I've been having, after they replaced the t/c and trans.

But I'm definitely making a point to take it in tomorrow morning. I was driving home from work tonight and it was so horrible that i cant stand it any longer. I think its a bad t/c they put in, something HAS to be off balance. Another member said something about them possibly dropping my drive shaft on the shop floor and bending it. Hell, I dono. I was hoping the ******. or whatever it is would just blow the F up so I'd know exactly what is causing it.

Guess I'll see what they say tomorrow..

I still find it very strange that you too the truck to them because of an exhaust leak and they replaced the transmission. And didn't even fix the exhaust. Doesn't make a lot of sense.

They would have fixed it if I wanted to cough up $300 for parts an labor..

Factory warranty was expired, and the extended warranty wouldn't cover it sooo... it's up to me.

I took it in today after noticing a separate (?) ticking when idling. I'm stuck with a rental until mid next week. Video here: https://youtu.be/aJ9Zy5beXw0

This one continues after the engine is warmed up (the previous one lasts for the first 90 seconds or so on a cold start up).

I'm really wanting to like this 6.4 but the thing is sounding like the motor on my 77 chevy.
