Hello All,

Did a search and found nothing on this which surprises me but.......

On three separate occasions I have had a random CEL light come on. On each occurrence the CEL light came on, blinking, for a few seconds and then went out. Then came back on again for a few seconds and went out. Each time the CEL came on for three start/stop cycles and then quit.

Every time that this happened I brought the truck immediately to my local dealership to have the codes scanned. On the first and third occurrence the code 0302 (misfire cylinder #2) was pulled. On the second time no code showed. Throughout the whole ordeal the engine never missed a beat.

The service advisor at my local dealer (a very sharp guy that I really trust) pretty much refers to this as the "fantom 6.4 misfire code". His thought is that there is an "overly sensitive" sensor. At this point I cannot disagree with him.

The only common denominator in each of these episodes is that the engine was not fully up to operating temperature; not cold but in the process to reaching normal operating temperature.

So apparently I am not alone with this problem but again, I haven't been able to find any information on this. Anybody else here on this forum having this issue??

TIA, Pete

Never heard of it but the dealer's info sounds reasonable. If you don't have one you might pickup a code reader. I got one off Amazon for under $50 and it's really nice to be able to pull it immediately so I don't have to go to the dealer. AutoZone stores will also pull codes for free and give you a printout of what it is.

Thank you for your response! I just ordered a code reader and should have it in a couple of days. Meanwhile, got the CEL again yesterday and once again, as the engine was warming up. This time it came on and stayed on. Pulled the battery cables to clear it. This is definitely happening on a more regular basis.

One of the odd things about this is my dealer sees this issue on other RAM's on a fairly regular basis and according to my service advisor Chrysler came up with a software update for this a couple of years ago which my truck already has. Yet I cannot find any information on this despite some pretty extensive online searching. So far the information that I have found indicates that if a vehicle has a misfire code, it truly has a misfire. I will keep looking.

Although I realize that I can continue to drive the truck with the CEL lit without harming anything, if this continues I will push my dealer for a resolution. It might be worth the effort to switch coil packs, etc. to see if the misfire code moves to another cylinder.
