Anyone know which would have a better overall output, the Morimoto fogs or a 5500k hid/led bulbs in the stock reflector housing?

Your asking to compare two different style of lights. Putting HID or LED is going to turn your factory fogs into basically another set of headlights. If you get into fog or snow they'll blind you more than anything. It also why some people say the Morimoto fogs "aren't as bright".
The Morimoto fogs are a projector that keeps all the light below the bumper.
Originally I had the Opt7 LEDs in the factory fogs and now have the Morimotos

I agree with crash68 and also went from opt7 to Morimoto XB fog lights. The opt7 were bright but unfocused, so the light was washed out. The XB’s put light down and in front.

I don’t have output shots of the opt7, this is the XB’s:

With the factory fog housings and HID/LEDs there would be light scatter all over the house and no sharp cut off line

I removed my Morimoto XB LED fogs after a year... In short, they suck! Pictures look great but the output of 1200 lumen from the drivers seat at night is a complete joke... I have better output from retrofitted Phillips 65w 9012 halogens in the factory fog housing, and Phillips 65w 9011 halogens to match in my factory projectors. Plus no more dealing with igniters and ballasts going bad either! It's been a win win all the way around!

Here is the how to in case you want to give it a go:

So basically the Morimoto fogs will be dimmer but more focused light. Will the led/hid will be more bright with scattered light. Anyone got any idea how much dimmer than say a 35w Morimoto hid kit.!?

Have to agree. I bought his morimoto fogs and while they look good and match my truck they don't really do much in the way of output. I am thinking I will have JJ at the retroshop do up a set of painted to match fogs for me with HID's to get some actual performance.

I've had various LED's to include OPT7. They are super bright, scatter, and light up the night! Angled properly, I never got flashed. I loved them! We get all four seasons in my area so anything exposed (fans and ballasts) eventually go to ****... That's why I'm glad to have found a halogen option. Otherwise I would be back into LED's in factory fogs in a heartbeat!
