I happened to check out my Magnaflow muffler today as I had yet to do and noticed that the inlet to the muffler is 2.5" and the exhaust pipe is 3". I know that any harm its doing now is probably negligible, but I have a y pipe I'd like to get installed and was wondering if the smaller inlet is going to hurt the more I open up (y pipe, ported TB, headers). Currently all piping its stock side from the muffler.

The inlet to the muffler is smaller than the pipe coming from the y pipe. And it's just the stock pipe as I've only switched the muffler so if the stock is 2.5 then that's what it is. So I probably have my sizes wrong.

Basically I'm just wondering if the smaller inlet is going to hurt performance the more I add to the exhaust.

Lol very nice. I'll have check or if someone else can verify stock pipe size. I just know the inlet is smaller than the pipe leading to it.

Stock from the Y is 3" into the muffler. If your muffler has a 2.5" inlet get one with a 3" inlet.

I was most likely going to but I just didn't know if it was worth having a new muffler welded in to replace it if it's not hurting performance.

And thanks for your help guys.

Like mentioned, stock piping is 2.5" in front of the y, and 3" from the back of the y-pipe to the muffler. Running the 2.5" muffler isnt going to kill your performance, but I would look to get a 3" before you add headers and the TB. Bringing that extra air in isnt going to help if it is being choked off at the muffler.

Finally getting around to replacing this in a couple weeks, now I'm wondering if I should just change the muffler to the correct size or just put on a complete Magnaflow catback. I'm getting the y pipe taken care of while it's in. Is the catback worth the cost or just stick to the muffler?

You will not feel a measurable performance difference between just a muffler swap and the full catback, but the catback was worth it to me. The 5" tips are perfect for these trucks, and I like that it removes the resonators and replaces the rear 2.25" pipe with 2.5" pipe. After looking at the 5" tips on my truck for the past few weeks, the stock tips just look too small and out of place IMO.

Thanks for the input. I was looking at getting tips as well for it but only if it deepened the tone. I've heard mixed feedback some saying it did and some saying it didn't.

The Magnaflow catback system uses a 22" muffler, but the note is very deep at idle. That is partially because of the larger tips as well as not having resonators. If you look at the cost of adding 5" tips, you are looking at an easy $250 after tips, adapters, and the welding. When you factor that into the equation, the catback start to sound much better.

I'm heading to a shop nearby next weekend to get an idea of what would be the best route, I guess we'll see what they suggest and I'll figure it out from there. Much appreciated Matt.
