Anybody swapping out just the stock muffler for a aftermarket? Just curious if you've got a bad drone because of the MDS or are you having to disable it with a programmer?

I took the chance that the guys ******** about drone were wrong.
I installed muffler delete and couldn't be happier. I've driven consistently at speeds between 20 and 80. Windows up/down/cracked/half down. No drone issues. She rumbles and barks deep. Get what sound fits you.

Same Set Up ^^^^^^^^^^

no matter what happens... when you mod the exhaust to be louder, you have to except the fact that there is going to be some drone. turn the radio up just a tad louder, or roll down the windows.

I have done many many exhausts on my past vehicles and to be honest only time I had an annoying ringing (drone) was in a 93 escort GT cause i literally just hacked the muffler off in the middle of the car. Drone is what you make of it after market exhaust is always going to present this problem, I chalk it up to listening to the motor breather better.

I understand what yal are saying but on my 08 there was a HUGE difference in the drone when the MDS kicked in. Without the MDS it sounded awesome with hardly any drone, but with the MDS it sounded like a log truck and that's what I wanna avoid. With my 13 I'm not sure if the MDS will affect it the same way or not

Get a tuner to turn MDS off.

Fixed.

I was trying to avoid spending a couple hundred on a tuner right now after I got rid of my other truck I told my wife I wasn't buying a programmer for this one but I think we both knew it was a lie lol

Even when my MDS kicks in, it's deep and throaty to me. Everywhere I go, I get people wanting to race. I live in an affluent neighborhood area and have been getting attention of every sports car around.
Monday evening I ran with a Super Snake Mustang and a Ferrari! Yes they are WAY faster than my truck dreams of...lol
It won't be quiet but if you want noise free cab, buy an escalade...lol

This subject has been a constant struggle for me for the last few months. I kinda like having a quiet truck, but at the same time I miss being able to hear it, especially since I know how good these trucks can sound! For a while I was thinking about installing an electric cut-out, and running two complete exhaust systems, I think I've talked myself out of that though, just don't want to spend much money on the truck right now. Other than cost, I would love to get a tuner, but I do NOT want to disable MDS. I must be in the minority because I actually like it, I try to wring every mpg I can out of the truck (without getting crazy and holding up traffic of course). I'm sure at some point I will just say screw it, order a muffler, and hope I like it.

Any chance one of you guys could take a quick sound clip of the MDS drone? Preferably someone with a Magnaflow, or Flowmaster (Those are MY top choices at least). I think this would help a lot of people out, if they/we knew exactly what to expect. I found one video on YouTube, but the sound quality was absolutely horrible!

One more question while we're on the subject, does anyone have any info on which mufflers are a direct Bolt on? Personally I would prefer to do it in my driveway vs going to a muffler shop and having them weld it up.

I'm here to tell you, sound clips and YouTube videos sounded nothing like what my truck is.
Unless the recording is with some ultra high quality microphones and you listen through ultra high quality speakers, it doesn't compare.
Just my experience as YMMV.

I understand I will have a drone in the cab that doesn't bother me its just when the MDS kicks in that I don't like. When you have a 3" exhaust and it cuts back to 4 cyl it sounds terrible like a civic with no exhaust at all. At least my 08 did I dunno how the 13 will compare

I agree, it's always better to hear something in person rather than a video, I was just hoping to get some sort of idea of what it sounds like. All I have to go on is what I've read... Sounds horrible, sounds like a log truck, and a few that said it doesn't bother them.

EXACTLY!!!

BTW, OP... Sorry to butt in, and ask questions in your thread, I just thought that any answers to my questions may help you out as well

I couldn't decide either. Was leaning towards at 14" maggy then took a chance and bought an electric cutout and I love it. It's not a refined sounds but my truck growls as soon as I give it some gas. And when I close it it sounds like the truck is off now.
