I'm posting this in exterior, because this is where I always see "my sponsors just sent me" or in the build threads where guys are like "welcome my new sponsor to the build", stuff like that. Maybe I'm behind on the times.. Or haven't done enough research (Doing it now)? Can someone explain why you/they have sponsors? Or is it just a term because they got a small discount and a window sticker?

I have multiple sponsors for my truck. They provide me with product and in return I use my vehicle as advertisement for them in car shows as well as social media and magazine. I have contracts with a few company's that are for a 1 year duration stating that I will provide them with pics and other content as well as be available for all photo shoots or other events they may ask me to attend.

The whole idea of a sponsor isn't just to get free stuff it's to help bring awareness to their brand in real world situations. There is a lot of requirements that you need to uphold or you're then responsible for repaying them.

Amen, you know how the game works then. You present yourself in a good manner, and show builds you have done or plan to do, it helps.
I sponsor a lot of cars/trucks over my years....hard to say yes, easy to say no...there are really just too many out there looking for handouts only.

But you understand how it works, and there's nothing wrong about posting it.

I guess depending on the application, it could actually end up costing you more $$ rather than buying the product. Things like gas, planning, time, etc. to attend photo ops, car shows, and things like that.

I can see it working out both ways, but definitely more in favor of the sponsor (obviously).

Depends on how you look at it.

lets use a full truck wrap for example. Cost is $2500 to $3000.

You take pride in your truck, you attend shows anyway, you love being unique, so you get someone to wrap it for you for free if you promote their logo.
In the logo, you call up Fuel Wheels, Nitto, Magnaflow, tell them for free or discounted gear you will add the logo onto the free wrap. Simple, even if they give you 50% off (you would probably add anyway) they get seen, logo placement, you get the product for free or discounted.

Now look 2 years later, you add a portfolio of show what you did, etc...you want to build a new truck. If you go back to that vendor, after solidly promoting them for 2 years, they offer it for all free this time. You build a cool truck, for a fraction of the cost for add-ons. Its a win win..sure you sometimes have the cash outlay for gas, etc...but you build a relationship of networking.

Your a small drive form SEMA in Vegas, a majority of the trucks built there are with help from sponsors. If they aren't, they are there networking TO GET sponsors.

But you have to stand out in the crowd when approaching a vendor. They get thousands of request weekly, or annually for free stuff.
Show them their investment in YOU has a return.

As the other guys said, sponsorships aren't just about getting a free product. Very few sponsorships actually supply products for free, generally they're just at a discounted price. I'm sponsored by Revel Performance so I get better deals than most on anything I order through them. Sometimes that works out to be the cheapest option by a long shot (my lift for example) but other times they simply can't beat other suppliers pricing. All depends on the product. In return I promote their name on forums and send them business whenever I can.
Same works for the guy that does my tuning on my truck. I paid an initial tuning fee when he first started up but since then he's done quite a number of revisions for me for free to either please my requests or ask me to test something out that he's changed. In return I give him good, thorough reviews of what I think of the tunes and again, promote his company a ton. My truck is one of the staple vehicles on his website and my YouTube video showing off his tunes a bit is at 320k+ views now I believe. Now sure how many customers that's sent him in return but I know it doesn't go unnoticed.

Well said Greygoose I make it a priority to have a relationship with my sponsors. I call and email them often with updated info on shows or with pictures of the truck. I want them to know who I am as a person. I believe that they aren't just sponsoring your truck but you as well.

Agree, constant contact, not just once annually. I walk thru SEMA and know a ton of vendors...but I talk to them all the time. Not just at SEMA.

So it's basically what I do already lol.. Just minus the discounted prices and shows. Every product I receive or use, I send pictures and a review to the company. Only with magnum truck gear, did I go out and actually take pictures specifically for them, for the side steps. They gave me a great price on them and only requested that I do that.

Check out these Magnum RT side steps ;)

But really, I see what you guys are saying.. Though I never even want a truck that would win any appearance awards at sema (pavement queens). Not knocking on them, just not my thing. Anyways... I get it.

Yup, see, they give them to for a decent price, makes you feel good about sharing your pics. SEMA is a little over the top, but you see our point.
Its kinda like your signature, your advertising for free, imagine what it would be like to get that at 50% off. :)

Which is exactly why I started this thread ;) .. Just trying to learn and get some insight from the experienced ones.

But the truth is... My signature is more or less to keep people from asking lol.

if i went to more meets (unfortunatly i live in ******** NJ currently and there are rarely any good meets) I would definitely work on getting sponsors.

Lately ive been a free advertisement everywhere i've been going people are like "whos truck is that its crazy i want to do that to mine"
I eventually just give in an say its mine and then the million and one questions start lol

Yea man, your truck does look nice! If I remember correctly, it gets put to good use too.

I will admit though... When I look at your truck, I imagine pouring gasoline on the dirt like 2Pac for his lost hommies.

yeah the "meets" around here for the most part are riced out **** machines with a bunch of idiots trying to do burnouts in there fwd civics. Not my cup of tea anymore.

Although i wish there were some good classic car meets around here..i have a thing for classics, next build will definitely be a 60s muscle car
