Hi all
I'm shopping for my first truck. I'm coming from a long run of sports car ownership.. So it's hard but exciting.

I want to do some plowing in the winter nothing . Crazy... And u also want to be able to tow up up to 9000lbs as I'm trying to set myself up for near near future where I'll need to tow.

I love how the 1500 ram looks with the ram air hood. .. Hid headlights.. I love tech so would like Navigation.

I found a 2010 2500 Laramie with 5.7 and 70000 miles.. It looks mint. Asking 28000 I think it's certified . Should I go with that or get a newer 2013 ram 1500,with warranty etc. .

I would would be daily driving it and I work 10 miles away. I dont do much else besides go to the gym and we use my wife's mdx for family stuff. I guess the 1500 would would be more tolerable to use for family stuff too

Are you guys happy with your your rams and if it's if so what would you recommend? Can they tow 9000 is lbs? I looked at sierra Tundra and and Silverado but honestly standing next to the ram really made me excited just looks cool inside and out.

Thanks guys. Hoping to go test drive some next weekend

I have been overall very happy with my Ram.
I would highly recommend the 2500 chassis over the 1500 if you want to tow 9k#s.

Not saying the 1500 cannot do it (when properly equipped), but the 2500 is just a more purpose built truck.

Also, having had a 2011 and a 2013 Ram, the 'electronics' they updated in the 2013+s have been troublesome without much end in sight. My 2011 had ZERO issues.

I too loved both my RAMs!! Towing 9k and winter plowing will push the 1500 suspension to its limits. That's the kind of work the 2500 was built for. The only real drawback to a 2500 with the 5.7 is the MPGs are about 1/3 less than a 1500 5.7.

Yeah if your planning on towing 9K+ and running a plow you will be better off with a 2500. That's not to bad a price on the 2010 Laramie. I would try to get them down t around $25K on it.

i love my ram 1500 its my second one the first was a 12 and now the 14 sport mines rated for 10000 lbs towing. although i wouldnt tow anything more than 75-80 percent of capacity for safety factor. if ur gonna do alot of towing 9000+ id go for the 2500 but for occasional towing or towing around 7-8000 lbs id get the 1500 for sure they have a very comfy ride and good power. my friend has a 12 sport and tows his 9000 lb trailer and told me he had no problem

Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. 2500 for sure.

Same as others for what you are going to do. Do the 2500 and you will be happier.

I am an old Ford guy and after test driving all the trucks the Ram was a super easy choice for me. I have the 1500 but I had a Cummins about a decade or so ago. I still say either Ford or Ram for a truck, you can't go wrong either way, but the Ram's are more comfortable thanks to the suspension and way more HP when I bought mine. With a name like Heracles and your intended uses, I would look hard at the Cummins. it is the best engine made, sometimes I want to get one even though I don't need it for my uses.

Snow plow and you tow, has Cummins written all over it. The steering components in the 1500 are not going to be what you want with a snow plow, so 2500 all the way no matter what, and Ram all the way too. 2009 and up 1500's have the coil over, but I'm not sure about the 2500. it doesn't matter anyhow, you need the 2500, but the coil overs make for a smooth ride. There must have been a reason the 2500's took longer to get it, maybe the coils didn't allow for heavy loads. Anyhow, even if you don't get the coil back suspension you can put air bags back there and it will be just as good.

I wouldn't rush it, around here you can get 2500 hemi's 2010 for between 20 and 24k all day. 28k for 70k mile truck is a little high IMO.

2010 Dodge Ram 1500 BIG HORN only 14 but it is a 1500.

2011 dodge ram cummins 2500 4x4 a little bit more but great truck

2010 Dodge Ram 2500 SLT 4x4 HEMI Crew Cab, Quad 14k miles what 14k miles for 22k and a 4x4? closer review it was salvage title, I almost bought this one, lol.

But remember those are not laramie and if you like the goodies big horn really is not enough so price is lower but you get less. Hemi is no slouch and no emissions issues that is what I like. Plowing is nice to have that Cummins torque.

For what your talking about I'd go 2500 all the way...preferable Cummins rather than v8....I am on my second 2500 Cummins and have ZERO complaints. ..The 4th gen has a much better quality interior than the 3rd gen...very nice for long trips...tows great even through deep snow over many mountain passes. ...

Cheers

In my opinion, if your going to be using the truck mostly for towing. Get the 2500. The 1500s with all the luxuries of the cars you might be use to don't have the base towing capacity that you'd need. For example my 2014 longhorn is rated around 8k for towing and less then 1k for payload. I use my truck more as a daily driver and very seldomly tow or haul anything. If you don't mind getting a lower end model of the Ram 1500, it'll have more towing and payload options for you. As a side note, if that 2500 you mentioned is from a dealership and is certified pre-owned then it will come with a warranty. If you buy a brand new truck either '13 or 14' you can get a life time warranty on over 5,000 parts for about 2200 dollars. PM for a link, as I don't have it readily available. If you are still in doubt about capabilities and prices just go to rams website, view what each model can do. Build and price some and get a good feel for what you want. I wish my truck had more capabilities but honestly I know that I will never or almost never use it to its fullest extent. Don't forget to check some out of state dealerships for there certified pre-owned vehicles if the local ones don't have any you like. I'd recommend Dave Smith Motors for new or used.

Good luck!

I forgot to mention plowing, the 2500 would be better equipped for that by far. In that aspect alone I'd say get the 2500. But if your just doing your drive way for plowing, throw one on your 4-wheeler. Not as effective but for cheaper and won't hurt your expensive truck.

Thanks for all the replies guys.

There is a beautiful 2010 Laramie mega cab loaded.. Black hemi.. They want 31k..60k miles certified

The other one is same year not mega cab 70k no rear dvd but heated seats and wheel with alpine.. 28k.

What would be a great offer for them to accept on those?

I want to buy a boat soon so this is setting that up. I won't tow it everywhere but occasionally and for plowing I'm looking to just do my house, parents so small stuff.

So tough. These guys really price those used 2500 High. I don't want to to spend almost 30k on a 4year old truck with 60+k miles even if they look mint. Why considering 1500 newer for a little more.

Mega cab vs crew is only... 1-2" of leg space if memory serves. Check that via www.ramtrucks.com so don't let that be your deciding factor. Go to Kbb or nada and see trade in value. The dealership took about that or less for the vehicle. Try to get closer to that price. If the vehicle is a 5.7 you'll obviously get better milage then the 6.4, and based off what you said earlier you don't need the bigger engine.

The other one is same year not mega cab 70k no rear dvd but heated seats and wheel with alpine.. 28k.

DVD player shouldn't be deciding factor. Personal preference on the steering wheel... That's like a must have for cold areas. No more cold fingers and driving Gloves. Heated seat is nice but you can add that to any vehicle later for roughly 500 bucks.

You didn't say if the second 2500 was certified pre-owned or not. That to me is where, if your set on one or the other, is the deciding factor. The certified one will come with a warranty so if it's just a little more it would be worth it for that reason alone.

Now, paying 28-32k for a used truck really makes you wonder why not buy new 1500? Well advantages to new is the stock warranty, new features and the fresh out the factory feel. The setbacks of buying the 1500 is less towing capacity & payload, for the 28-30k range you'll be getting a lower end model 1500. Nothing wrong there but if you like the luxuries of the higher end you might want to stay used. Don't talk yourself up from a 30k truck to a 60k truck like I did. I decided I liked the features. ;) didn't help that the only way to get the diesel was to buy new. Or I would of got certified pre-owned.

Hope this helps.
