Good morning,

I'm looking for some advice from the shock experts here on the forum.

About 7 years ago, I installed a pair of ICON 2009-2023 Dodge/Ram 1500, 1.5” Lift, Rear, Dual Rate Coil Springs.
Around 4 months ago, I installed a pair of Bilstein B8 5160 Suspension Shocks, Part Number: 25-311389 (for vehicles with 0-1" rear lift).

Not paying close attention at the time, I now realize I probably purchased the wrong set of 5160s. I believe I should have bought Bilstein B8 5160s Part Number: 25-325089, which are designed for vehicles with 1-2.5" rear lift.

Given that:

  • I currently have a rear coil providing about a 1.5” lift,
  • and I installed shocks intended for 0-1" lift,

Will this cause me problems?

  • What side effects should I expect (premature shock wear, topping out, poor articulation, etc.)?
  • Could this impact my 4-wheeling performance on more aggressive trails?

Most importantly — should I replace the shocks with the correct 5160s to avoid any potential issues?

Thanks in advance for the advice!

Tim

Imo don't focus on advertised lift heights. See if you can track down the overall extended lengths and compare that to the stock shock dimensions.

Measure your trucks ride height, center of hub to edge of fender vertically. Than lift the front by the center cross member and rear by the hitch so you allow the suspension to drop. Measure the hub to fender at full extension. I would say you want 3" front and at least 3-4" rear drop for good ride quality. This is just a rudimentary way for some quick and dirty starting points.

For what it's worth, I went on shock surplus sight and was able to find a Bilstein 4600 part number that is OE replacement, but still longer than stock. Ive run that with a couple pairs of rear coils now (Bilstein and Synergy) and have no issues even though they are advertised as stock. You're not wrong to fundamentally be concerned but you are most likely more than fine.

Yea i would just unload the rear axle to full droop and assure the shocks are not topped out or severely limiting travel. If not, then you are good to go.
