You will have better gains with long tube vs short tube.

Well from what I've read, the short tubes are more of a direct fit and I want to do as little modification as possible

I just did a cam, and Long tube (LT) headers among other things. I never had shorties so I can't tell you which is better long vs. short. General consensus is LT's give better bottom end than shorties. Given that I'm moving a 5000+ lb truck, I've built for bottom end.

If you decide to go shorties, such as BBK (most popular shorty choice) then no, you won't have to do any modifying. They bolt to the stock Y pipe.

On that note, the stock Y pipe is very restrictive in it's design. For my set up (and the most common LT set up for us) is Pacesetter ceramics with the pacesetter off-road Y pipe. The headers are nearly the same price as the shorties, so for the additional $185 for the Y pipe, it's worth it to me.

Now, I did get blind sided by additional cost because I decided in the end to have my stock cats welded back into the aftermarket Y pipe, (I can give you a how-to write up if you'd like) And if you choose to do it, I strongly recommend having a pro exhaust shop do it for you. I also replaced my FM 50HD series at the same time so there was more $ I didn't see coming. And the whole system dumps after the axle.

All in all I'm very happy with my exhaust. Between the cam and the exhaust system it barely sounds like a Ram any more. I turn heads because guys think it's late 60's muscle coming.

Thanks for the reply, that was very helpful. And I'm glad you mentioned the sound, cause I'm actually more intrigued with the sound of it than I am with the gains. Like I said before, I'm mechanically illiterate. So what's this Y pipe that you speak of lol

Headers v. manifolds

Headers are where each cylinder has it's own pipe or runner to channel the exhaust gasses down to the collector. The runners are usually around 1.5-1.75" and collectors are usually 3"

Currently you have exhaust manifolds on your truck. Manifolds are where each cylinder dumps its exhaust into the same pipe, or "log". There is one manifold on each side of your engine. The left bank and the right bank. Since virtually no vehicle comes with a true dual exhaust from the factory, they need to combine the left and right bank exhaust manifolds into a single pipe to make up the rest of the exhaust system. This is what the Y-pipe does, it literally is a "Y". On your 05 the Y-pipe also contains the two catalytic converters (one for each bank).

The stock Y-pipe on our trucks was a fairly poor design, rather than make a nice, properly manufactured "Y", they instead sort of mashed the two sides of the "Y" together, turning each pipe into a deformed oval shape and then joined that with a single 2.5" pipe called the intermediate pipe that goes in-between the Y-pipe and your muffler. All in all a pretty restrictive set up.

Long vs. shorties....
This is a huge debate and it rages on, I'll let you do your own reading on this one, but as it was explained to me, LT's tend to move exhaust gasses more quickly, so your not moving volume, so much as velocity. When a cylinder fires and exhausts, that exhaust comes out as a "pulse" and that pulse travels down the header runner with whatever velocity it was pumped out of the cylinder with, but once it reaches the collector (where all 4 runners join into one pipe) it creates a sort of vacuum in the remaining 3 runners on that bank, thus actually drawing the exhaust gasses down as each cylinder fires thereafter. And apparently LT's do this more efficiently than shorties. I would love to see this done with a smoke test, but thats how it was explained to me.

Sound:
There are lots of ways to create lots of different sounds with these trucks; muffler selection, pipe sizing, length and style of headers, cats vs. no cats, even where you dump it.

Something to consider, if you're after noise more than actual HP/TQ gains, a simple cat-back may be fine for you.

So what are you looking for? Low rumble? Raspy muscle car? Jack-ass loud?

That was some good info, thanks. When I purchased the truck, the person that had it before me put dual exhaust on it with no muffler with the exhaust tips coming out the sides behind both tires (I'm not sure if this is what they call "true duals"). Anyways, the sound that this produced was just too raw and rugged sounding at the top end of gears, it sounded more like glass packs. so I took it to a muffler shop and had them to put a flowmaster muffler on and this made it sound much better with a more smooth "controlled" sound. As far as the sound I'd like to have would be more towards the muscle car sound.

Now on the headers, I purchased BBK shorty tube headers last night, after all of my research it seemed like the more practical choice for me.

I looked up under my truck yesterday to see what the exhaust system looked like and I don't know enough about it to know if the person before me had the stock y pipe replaced or not

Moe's Performance

Give these guys a call.

They were real helpful and didn't mind spending the time to answer all the annoying questions I had regarding gearing, headers/exhaust, CAI, etc
