Hello All, I am new to the group. I have a 2017 ram which is having a major misfire on cylinder. Two dealership says that I need a new cam and more than likely a new engine because there’s most likely metal throughout looking to get a remanufactured engine put in any suggestions on prices or places to go I live in Massachusetts thank you in advance. Also apologies in advance that this was posted anywhere else I looked, and I could not find it.

Depending on your wants and budget... if keeping the truck long term....

Start with valve cover removal and inspection... a deeper look is to take the front clip off and remove the cam for inspection.

Drain the current oil and filter to check for wear materials... cut open the current oil filter and inspect there, too.

If no metal found... could just need a new cam and lifters, and maybe you do the proper MDS delete as well (MDS delete is an additional option, but not necessary if replacing the cam & lifters..this is a choice option only).

If riddled with glitter and debris... look for a new replacement long block and start anew. That's if you're going to keep your rig.

My $0.02

Good luck, and hopefully the engine can be recovered.

Pull the intake, and then pull the VVT solenoid at the front of the engine. If the VVT's solenoids screen is full of metal, buy a new long block or crate engine,if it's not full of metal you can probably just stab a new cam and lifters in the engine. If you decide to delete the MDS you'll need to tune the truck
You can buy brand new crate engines for your truck. This is only one outfit with them.In the long run when you factor in labour to transfer and clean everything from your old engine,a drop in crate engine becomes more feasable

Yeses..

Forgot about inspection on the VVT solenoid... perfect place to start!

Hopefully OP's engine can be salvaged!
