if a dolly is legal with the weight, then put it on normal once loaded, unbolt the rear driveshaft from the differential tape the cups so they stay on the u joint and tie the shaft up so it stays in the transmission and out of the way of the rearend yoke. I towed a pickup 1600 miles this way with a tow hitch.

I ABSOLUTELY HATE "SAFETY" CABLES, especially since they installed them right next to the shoulder, absolutely no chance of saving your vehicle if and when you get pushed off the road. Heaven forbid you are on a bike and get run off the road, you won't stand a chance of living.
They Damn things need to be in the center of the median. Give us a fighting chance to save our vehicles and lives.

I agree, I don't know why they have to be so close to the road. This was on an interstate hwy with a wide median. I'm sure we'll see a bill from MoDot for that damage too. Insurance will cover it though.

I know u said your trailer issue is resolved but for future reference -U-Haul trailers are so well known for poor maintenance, no brakes etc that there are Law Firms that specialise in suing them.
I f you rent a trailer from them check it over very carefully to make sure the hitch holds tight, brakes work etc.

An advert for one of the Law Firms and an Older Article on U-Haul

Defective U-Haul Trailers

U-Haul is the only company that will rent moving trailers to be towed by an SUV. All other companies require trailers be towed by a heavier vehicle. This, along with poor maintenance, lack of brake systems, and lack of anti-sway devices has resulted in numerous auto accidents involving rollover of the towing vehicles.

Weight Ratio

In order to safely tow and maintain control, the towing vehicle must be heavier than the loaded trailer. U-Haul only requires that the towing vehicle be as heavy as the trailer, not heavier. They do not inform their customers of the importance of the towing vehicle’s weight and the fact that what they haul will affect their safety.
Brakes

Independent braking systems can greatly increase control over a trailer and reduce the risk of auto accidents. U-Haul has actually removed these braking systems from their trailers so they won’t have to spend the money to maintain them.

Poor Maintenance

Even a trailer with the proper braking system, adequate safety devices, and a good vehicle-to-trailer weight ratio can easily wreck if maintenance has been overlooked. U-Haul has a history of failing to inspect and maintain its trailers.

No Ford Explorers

Interestingly, U-Haul will not allow its trailers to be towed by Ford Explorers; any other type of SUV is allowed. The company claims that it is not a safety issue, but that it is due to the expense of defending numerous lawsuits involving Ford Explorers.

Op,

Have you called an auto transport vendor? Check with your local car dealership or auto reseller, typically these firms will transport disabled vehicles for a reasonable cost, $300 to $600 bucks. Or call someone like uship.

I did think about that also, thanks. But as I mentioned, we are just totaling it out at this point.

Once needed to move a car from California to Texas. U-Haul was short of car trailers and wanted $1200 to rent trailer. Craigslist provided a low boy trailer with 8,000 weight capacity for $1,800. It had decent tires and brakes, paint and boards were fair. Harbor Freight had straps to anchor car. I bought it, towed car to Texas and sold trailer for $1700 a week after I bought it. Total cost was $100. You may want to look into buying a used trailer. The only problem I had was the trailer had an angle iron rail around it that kept you from opening the car door more than an inch or two. After the driver climbed out of window had to use a stick to roll up the window.
Haven't tried to buy a trailer, new or used, recently, have you? Finding one in decent shape would run some decent $$ up front. The flatbed market is a lot like the truck market right now - supply is LOW.

Even enclosed heavy duty single axle motorcycle trailers are selling fast
I was eye balling a special made trailer, i could have easily loaded my Harley Trike into it, with all the extra parts.
The previous owner had designed it himself & the sales lot was jazzed to have it in inventory.
It had the full rear, drop down tailgate & a side door
I'm sure there was a least one rack in it.
It had a tapered front, to cut the air better.
I came very close to buying it, i saw it sitting there for a month & then it was gone.
As was another toy trailer the same size, but taller & it didn't have the tapered front.
Now they just have open trailers, with single, dual, & triple axle
Well except for 1 old 2 horse trailer that must be there as a commission type thing

I recently rented an auto-trailer from Uhaul and when they hooked it up the lights didn't work. The young guy at Uhaul had no idea what to do and I had to get moving so he gave me tools and I spliced a new plug on and was on my way. I'm sure Uhaul's lawyers would have loved that one!

I rented a U-Haul car hauler trailer once, about 15 years ago. We moved from MN to AR and I needed to haul our Subaru WRX down. The trailer was in great shape and we had no issues, FWIW.
