Hey guys, purchased my first diesel this last weekend. I am very familiar with gas engines and work on short block Chevys. This is my first diesel I've ever owned and I am curious on what are some proper procdures to do with diesels. I won't be towing anything heavier besides my half ton c10 Chevy that I drag with as of right now. I bought the diesel mainly for a reliable truck that I don't want to replace for 10+ years. Not sure if anyone has former threads I can read and what not. Thanks everyone

Edit: bought a new 2016 2500

Biggest difference maintenance wise is fuel filter every oil change. My last diesel was an 06 and I know A LOT has changed since then. All the emission equipment has some things you have to deal with. I've heard the new, new ones (like yours) are much better than some of the first right after the changeover to DPF. I think that was round 07ish.

Unless they changed something you don't need to do fuel filters every change.... I use the % meter on the dash and it goes prolly 30k before it needs changed... Biggest thing is draining it to get rid of any water that gets in the fuel.... I'll double check tomorrow and see how many miles I have on mine and how many % I have left. That's on a 2014

According to the manual, you are supposed to change the fuel filters every 15K miles, there is no time constraint.

Your oil is every 15K miles or 6 months, whichever comes first.

OP, lots of threads, lots of info. There are also Cummins specific forums with TONS of information for you to read.

Thanks for the great support! I will get some pictures up tomorrow when I get it from the dealership. I had some things included such as the blacked out running boards to match the black out package I got. Also, got the factory spray in bedliner done. Guess my main question was what things to look out for and types of maintenance that people recommend doing outside of the normal manual.

I am defiantly in a bind right now with the dealership on getting the Extended warranty as I have been outsourcing to other providers who are cheaper with an extra year. I have also been debating on the Simoniz package, anyone got some reviews on this? Everything I've googled has been old posts and nothing up to date. Thank you!

Quick run down on my driving habits with my diesel...

I am a volunteer fireman in a decent sized town. I drive roughly a mile to work for the sole reason that if i get a call for the department i can respond in a timely manner. In the summer i drag a 13,000# camper and a boat fairly often.

I change my oil every 6 months, which tends to only be 5,000 miles for me. Due to my short trips back and forth to work i would change mine around the 5,000 mile mark anyways due to the possible moisture build up as i rarely hit full operating temp, and if i do its not for long.

as far as the fuel filter and seperator, i plan to do that every second oil change in my case or 10,000 ish miles...

really not a ton of maint to be done that isn't done on the gas counter parts.

Grease your u-joint on the front axle as you would with the gasser version and keep up on the fluids...

winter time, make sure to run some sort of anti gel / fuel treatment. some run treatment all year round, but i dont.

I live with a diesel all week long, semi tractor-trailer. Short trip's are hard on a diesel, they take a while to warm up. Not getting fully warmed up with short trips can lead to a myriad of fueling issues and injector problems..
