Now I know diagnosing noises on the internet is next to impossible but thought I’d try anyway.

Recently purchased this truck and when I bought it it had big ole brodozer wheels and tires on it. I found a set of factory 17’s from a private seller, ordered some BFG All Terrains and got everything done yesterday. Finally got a chance to take the truck out today and noticed a noise it hasn’t made before.

It sounds like a screeching/rubbing noise. Only does it when moving and it really doesn’t go away. I’ll hear it from barely rolling on up to 50+. The only way I can describe the noise is it sounds like rubber squawking. Same sound you’d hear if you, say, rub two tires together. I’ve checked behind the tire and checked it when I mounted them, I have clearance. Granted, it’s not a lot, but I do have clearance so i don’t think my tires are rubbing against anything. Checking around the rim I see I have clearance to clear the brake system, which I figured I would as they were factory wheels. Also when I looked under the truck, I checked the inside of the tires for any evidence of rubbing and they look like they did when I put them on the truck so I don’t think it’s the tire that’s rubbing..

Now I’m all kinds of confused smiley_abused.gif

2014 Ram 1500 4x4. Factory 17” wheels with 285/75/17 bfg all terrain ko2’s.

Need to add: There was no odd feeling in the steering wheel or pedals. Actually the truck drives extremely smooth now. Old tireswere worn out mud tires so that vibration and noise is gone, but this noise is new. I would have heard it even over the old tires, they weren’t terribly loud. No vibrations or anything, just noise and from what I’ve seen, no evidence showing where the noise came from

Its a bushing somewhere in the suspension. Lube them all up, it will go away. In my experience its sway bar but who knows, but my money is a bushing is dried up. Spray on lithium grease and dont be shy. Make sure to hit them all then drive within a few miles it should shut up.

Also, wouldn't hurt to jack up the truck and spin wheels freely. The front two wheels should spin pretty easy by hand. Any amount of heavy resistance should be paid attention to.

Did you already sell the old wheels?

Yeah I did that when I put them on. After they were tightened down I spun em a couple times to make sure they spun freely and they did. But there wasn’t a couple thousand pounds of truck on them either so not sure if that made a difference

I would point to the suspension then like WilliamS pointed out in post#2. If it happens at super slow speeds, have someone walk next to you while you find some slightly uneven terrain. Don't run your buddy over, but see if someone can find "approximate" location, at least that helps you drill down to the cause.

Yeah that’s a good idea. My wife is currently at the academy so I was by myself today. I will say I stopped on flat, level asphalt and rolled my windows down. As I barely rolled forward (<5 mph) I heard it immediately. This leads me to believe it may not be suspension related as I wasn’t going over any sort of bumps, uneven terrain, gravel, etc.

That's a great start! See if you can get closer to the sound. I've laid on the ground a time or two just to have someone driver over top of me while I look and listen to weird noises.

I'm NOT saying to do that.

Just making a point :drunk:

Don't drink and diag.

Also check the shields on back of the brake rotors. I had one slightly bent on my Monte that would only screech when backing up. Forward was fine. Once I tweaked it away from the rotor the noise stopped.

Dry U joints can make all kinds of funny noises. Time to check them.

Yeah I don’t think I messed with the shields but that’s my next investigation. Doesn’t really sound like a metal on metal sound but it’s not the easiest to diagnose from inside the truck. Not ruling it out though.

No haven’t gotten an alignment yet. Tire shop took an extra 3 Days to get my 4th tire in :flipthebird: so that messed up my schedule. Plan to this next week sometime though when I’m off again.

Yeah I’ll check those too. Just weird that the noise showed up after the new wheels and tires. And the noise is similar to that of a rubbery squeak so I can’t help but feel like the noise is tires rubbing somewhere I’ve just not been able to find the noise yet

I once got a small stone wedged behind the rotor shields while offroad. squealed like a scalded dog. took a couple of us to find it. thought it was a bearing at first.

I think the reason it sounded rubbery at first was because it was barely scraping a coat of plastidip. After it got thru that it began sounding like more of a metal scraping noise. Thanks for the help fellers :)
