In 2011 I bought a 28 ft. travel trailer GVWR 7300. I bought an Infiniti QX56 at the same time to pull it. My kids were 6mos. and 3 years old. Now the kids are 8 and 5-1/2. No more cumbersome car seats, they all ride in smaller booster seats. I've traded in the Infiniti on a 2016 Ram Laramie, 3.92 axle ratio, 5.7 Hemi, Crew Cab. I like the utility of the pickup over the practicality of the SUV. in 2011 I had one Dalmatian. She just had a litter and I'm keeping one of the pups. I'm planning on putting a cap on the back and putting the dogs in crates for their safety. I've got a bike rack on the back of the trailer that carries 2 bikes. My question is, would it be short-sighted of me to not put a rack on the top of the cap. As the kids get older I imagine they'll want to bring more stuff with them than they've brought so far. Up to now, I've put the extra stuff in the trailer. With two crates in the back of the truck, I won't have a ton of room left. Anyone have any advice for me?

I'd get the rack. Been there, done that and it works well. Just make sure you don't overload the truck. All that stuff stored inside the cap, on the cap, the weight of the rack, trailer and gear stored there all count against the GVWR.
