So I opted to have my local dealership do a flush and fill on my cooling system, cost was just under $300 in total. The service advisor came to me mid-way of the service and recommended a thermostat change at the same time. I asked what the additional charge would be and was quoted $255. What I don’t understand is you already have the hose off because you would’ve taken the thermostat out to do the flush and fill the coolant system is already empty. Why would you charge me $255 for a full service when the only thing extra that you would be doing is putting in a new thermostat. The hoses are already off. The thermostat housing is already disconnected. The system is already drained. The only additional work would be opening the box for the thermostat and installing a new gasket and then putting the thing back together and adding the required amount of coolant. I’ve never heard of a thermostat and gasket costing $255. It never fails but a lot of dealerships out there always want to upsell you.

Look at the parts diagram. Hemi engine thermostat is captured within an aluminum coolant housing. You have to buy it as an assembly. You can find it cheaper online and not let the stealership rip you off.
Better yet, research a reputable independent shop in your region to have better work done for less. Many of us do.

That's only on the 6.4 trucks Brian. The 5.7's still use a replacable thermostat inside a steel housing.

If your truck doesn't have any over heating issues do not change the thermostat, there's a very good chance the replacement thermostat will have issues down the road.

Geez dude! 2 bolts, two minutes of work and less than a gallon lost of coolant if you just change the thermostat yourself in the driveway with a full system.

Even going OEM again that price is nuts!

WTF do they need two different thermostat housings for for the same block?!?!
About all i got is it has something to do with towing or emissions. The SRT 6.4's use a normal style thermostat,it's just the truck 6.4's that use the electrically heated version. If you want to spend the money to tune your truck 6.4,you can do away with the gold plated truck set-up and install a normal thermostat and housing, then use HP to delete the thermostat rational code that you'll have.
