New forum member, first post. Thanks in advance for your help.

I ran into problems fueling my new 2500 Diesel yesterday. It was the first time to fill up, since it came from the dealer already full.

First question: I noticed I don't have a gas cap. Is this normal, or did the dealer forget to replace it when they filled it?

Second question: For some reason, the fuel nozzle shut off after a couple of seconds each time I tried to fill up. It didn't matter whether I ran it fast or slow, I still got shut off. I tried at two different Shell stations with the same result. As a last resort I tried filling up at a grocery store's pumps and it worked fine (I was 400 miles away from home and needed to get back). Is there a technique I need to learn for this? It was weird that it wouldn't work at either of the Shell stations, but was fine at a store. FWIW: I had the nozzle inserted well past the check valve that closes the fill port.

No fuel cap on the diesels.
There is a second flap past the first one on the filler neck, you need to make sure you jam the nozzle in all the way to get past the second flap.

They sell aftermarket “Magnetic” caps that seal pretty decent, can pick one up prolly for 20$-30$ bucks. A lot of newer vehicles do not run fuel caps now a days, and depending on ur enviroment it may not be a bad idea to pick one up.

Nope, no fuel cap or DEF cap on the diesels. I found some nice anodized billet aluminum lockable caps for the fuel and DEF filler necks at Geno's Garage online.

I had a similar fueling problem with my 2014 HD truck. No issues with the 2017 but what I found was that I had to make sure the fuel nozzle was fully and deeply seated to keep the fuel delivery running up to the point the tank was full.

Ahhh. Now I understand it. Thanks to everyone for your replies, and to Jimmy07 for the info about the second flap. That explains the immediate shutoff of the pump.

Next step: a tonneau cover. :)

I bought some aluminum caps off of Amazon. They aren't locking caps, but I think they should work better than what's on there.

I just filled my 1500 EcoDiesel for the first time and was shocked when there was no gas cap as well, you are not alone. I was coming to ask the same question and found yours first, thanks! I'll piggyback with a dumb question of my own, is there a way to get BlueDEF at a fuel pump? I've seen it sold in jugs in-store but I figured it would be easier to buy than that. Also, what happens if you run out of it? I know it does "something" to improve emissions but that's all I got from the dealer.

Sorry to thread-jack but anyone new to diesel has to be wondering the same thing.

Yeah, quite a few truck stops offer it, and it's ideal to use them, as it's always nice and fresh. I don't know where you are, but if you come across a big buccees ( texas? ) they always have it at the pump! If you run out of DEF, you'll be put into a limp mode, and when that happens, you can't go faster than 35 or 40 I believe. Not exactly sure what the max MPH is on the ED.

It wasn't mentioned, but the 1st thing I did when I got my 1st diesel, was buy a green fuel cap from Genos as a final check against putting gas in it, as at 42 yrs old, I had never owned a diesel before.

You might **** off some CDL Drivers but it is handy AF to just have both nozzles right there

Note to anyone using the diesel pumpy at truck stops: pump it real slow, one click on the handle. Truck diesel pumps are allowed to pump 3X faster than the light passenger pumps.
The DEF pumps are not a problem. Some require a magnet ring so it will dispense, ask the counter if they have one you can use.

I cannot tell you how nervous I was at the pump thinking I was about to grab the gas handle by habbit. I checked and double checked before finally giving it a squeeze. The place I went they were both black handles so it made it extra stressful.

On the flip side of that, I was always conscious to not use the diesel pump when there was 16 other F’ing gas pumps open with a gas vehicle ... not every oblivious moron shares the same courtesy though... and now I get to experience it
