My 16' Sport only has 12,500 miles, not crazy about the original GY's as far as handling goes, added some air today and saw this 501qgYE.jpg, I know it's just a thin sheet of rubber over this area, but how bad is this?

How deep is that chunk? Is it bulging? If it’s just a little surface scratch that doesn’t look like the sidewall integrity is jeopardized, I run them through the winter and just look forward to replacing them with something better next year in the spring/summer for when the heat cranks up.

Judging by the scraping around it I would say someone curbed it pretty hard or ran over something they shouldn't have. I would run it until it was worn out myself.

It's just the thin top surface layer, not bulging at all. I live in Florida so no winter here.I hate to replace these so soon, but they are not good tires to begin with IMO.

I would go back and say something then because that didn't just happen. That's why no recalls have been done on my truck, I refuse to let those clowns in it.

It looks like the tire contacted an outside curve in a rather new curbstone. The abrasion seems to be quite short along the sidewall, so the curb got a nip at it, but apparently not enough for the tire to get onto the curb and then come back down again. It would have felt like a bump or maybe even like the truck had gone over a small pothole. Purely cosmetic, I'd say, from the appearance.

well it was in the dealer last weekend and I drive a company truck all week, so even though they were the last ones to drive it, it would not be worth the fuss. Also to be fair I may have run over something sharp on the road it happens .I guess this could be my excuse to put something on I like.

I just got rid of those tires after 9000 miles. They are just ****** tires lol. To me that would justify a new set. Or keep running them and keep an eye on it. Although I’ve seen many trucks here that have had blowouts with these tires.

It would be really helpful to post a picture of one of those blowouts to establish, perhaps, what is going on with them.

They’re not. Lol. That’s why I pulled mine off with just 1500 miles on them so I could get some money out of them towards something better.

Yeah, there’s not much of a winter down there but still, you should still have a few months of cooler temps to save up for a much better set.

I agree ****** tires to begin with, makes me a bit nervous looking at it. I guess I can start looking for what I want to replace them with. I want to keep my stock 20 sport rims, I would like something more aggressive an AT tire I live on a dirt road. Other than my dirt road I stay mostly on pavement, so nothing too noisy or clunky to suck up too much gas or slow it down to much .I have a 2 inch level on front and would like to go to a bigger tire, I also like the look of white letters. any suggestions?

I went with Bfgs KO2’s. But they may be a little more than what you’re looking for. They are a little louder than stock. A lot more aggressive and a you may loose an mpg or so. They ride a little tougher but they handle and grip the road soooo much better than the stick Goodyear’s. My other choice was Goodyear duratracs.

those are nice looking tires jstmahoney what size did you go with? do you have 20 inch rims? and do they also come with white letters? I expect to lose a mpg or so going to an AT, but want a better handling tire for sure.

Do you tow at all? There’s plenty of nice riding, aggressive looking AT tires out there that won’t break the bank too bad, give good wet/dry/ traction, won’t eat up too much mileage but unless you tow heavy, and do some pretty heavy duty off-roading, or drive in places where flats happen more often, I’d stay away from the BFG KO’s. They are an 8-ply, LT tire so you’re gonna feel every bump in the road. Don’t get me wrong, they’re good tires in which they were intended for but if you don’t do any of that and are just looking for a great looking tire, there’s plenty of alternatives.

Also you mentioned larger. Since you’re leveled, you could probably go up to a 35 which might offer the outlined white letters(OEM 275/60/20’s are blackwall) but keep in mind, those are probably gonna be an even stiffer 10-ply. And also whether you run these in the stock size or the larger 35’s, BFG will recommend you run the smaller 8-ply OEM size at a minimum of 50 psi so, they’re gonna be even tougher than running them at 39 which in accordance with BFG isn’t recommended. Good luck.

As crappy as those damn OEM Goodyears are and as dangerous as they are on wet pavement, I'd use that sidewall damage as an excuse right now--today--to get a brand new set of tires!
Jay
^^^^ +1. Sidewall damage ain't nothing to mess with. That is now a weak spot, period, nothing else you can say about that, it ain't gonna get any better. I blew a sidewall out of a continental on my f150 at 50 mph. Tires had less than 5k on them and no apparent damage, never been curbed, I was the only one that ever drove the truck.

I don't tow at all, and yes Jay those OEM GY's are not good on wet pavement, I've been planning to replace them eventually, so it looks like a good time now lol. Corneileous thanks for the info, I would like a larger more aggressive looking tire, I don't mind spending a bit more to get what I will be happy with(hopefully longer than 12,000 miles!)If you don't recommend BFG KO'S what are some you do recommend?
