Hey guys,
I thought I’d give you all an update on the OEM Remote Start Kit that I installed on my 2017 Ram. I waited quite a while for a cheap kit to come available on eBay (picked it up for $140USD plus shipping). The kit comes with a hood latch, two tip start keys, a wire harness that goes from the hood latch to the BCM, ten zip ties, and a CD that has install instructions.
I swapped out the hood latch. It was easy to replace because the rust proofing I got on the truck left an outline where the old one sat. When I pulled off the hood liner to install the new wiring harness I noticed that the factory wiring harness was sitting there waiting for me. I grabbed my multimeter and toned out one pin to ground and the other went to pin 11 of the BCM as it was supposed to. My guess is that all the trucks are wired the same and then they decide what options to put on afterwards. I took the truck to the dealership and they flashed my truck with the new code and program the two fobs and it worked with no problems. They charged me $65CAD for the work.
What I found interesting about this whole process is that when I first bought my truck they quoted me $1000CAD to do the entire install. $419 for the remote starter and $520 for labour. Once it was installed and working I took my truck to the guy who quoted me on it and I told him what I paid for the Mopar kit and told him what I did for the install and he was shocked. They either don’t know that these trucks are pre-wired or they try to maximize profits by quoting high and hoping people don’t realize how easy it is to install yourself.
Long story short, if you’re in the market for a remote starter and you’re unsure whether to go factory or aftermarket, the Mopar kit only set me back about $250CAD.
Cheers!
