10K here too...

Every 5K I change the Frantz filter and then every 10K change oil and main filter with a fresh frantz filter as well.

Using Chevron Delo, Mobile One, Mobile Delvac, Shell Rotella 15w-40... Dino oil is just fine...

Every 3k. I am used to doing that on all vehicles that I have owned which were gasoline powered. New to the diesel world, so just figured changing it often couldn't hurt.

WAY TOO EARLY and VERY WASTEFUL! Even for a gasoline rig... Remember you diesel has nearly 3 gallons of oil in it... (Mine actually does hold 3 gallons because of the Frantz Filter). Even with oil testing over at TDR they found that most over the countrer engine oil can make it to 20K miles without a probem. I would be changing oil at 20K but I'm in a very dusty / dirty environment driving mainly dirt roads.

Even my 1996 Dodge Ram 1500 suggest 6K for oil changes...

As far as I remember the manual recommends 7k for highway vehicles/long distance and 5k for the special case vehicles(schedule B)

Thanks for enlightening me. I knew the manual says 7.5k. Oh well, longer intervals means more money in my pocket.

Yeah like emergency vehicles that run WOT and then shutdown... Even my buddy (CajFlynn) with 1.2 MILLION miles change oil every 20K miles.

Remember this isn't 1970's...

I am curious about something. Will it make a difference if I am using mine as a daily driver? And I don't let it sit and warm up before I go. I do warm up before towing. And I DO NOT accelerate hard. To get to the store, I have to get on the I-H and drive 8 miles.

Enlighten me as i have been changing oil at 3000 miles since i bought this truck in 2000 i do not use synthetic oil. These intervals you are quoting are for synthetic correct? I use rotella, mobile, delo 10w40 oil, fram filter 3976-A, been using them for years. My previous cummins was taken care of the same way, that truck was used as a commercial boat hauler also from new.

No... Petroluem oils...

I use rotella, mobile, delo 10w40 oil, fram filter 3976-A, been using them for years.

I would skip the Fram filter too many problem and Dodge/Cummins both issued TSB's for Fram filters.

My previous cummins was taken care of the same way, that truck was used as a commercial boat hauler also from new.

No the owner bought the truck with about 200K on the clock and put the 1.2 Mil on it on over 4 years time... He clears roughly 800-1,000 miles a day... It makes for long days.

Hell to make things even worse I got a guy on my forum that cleared 84K miles on a single oil change. Had Blackstone Labs test his oil every 7K miles... Guess what he was running? (05 Dodge 2500 Cummins)
  • WalMart Supertech Univerial Diesel Oil 15w-40
  • Fleetguard Oil Filter
  • Motorguard Bypass Filter
So this thought of the 3K miles limit has now just been total blown out of the water... I still got a wonderful article (PDF file) from TDR.com about oil testing and how they even admit that most oils will cover 15-20K miles without a problem. (Still have no way to upload 200Kb PDF)

So let me see if i'm on the same page as i'm sorta cornfused, i should change oil every 7500 miles or i can go as far as 10,000 with no issues using regular petroleum oil in a daily driver correct? Don't use fram filters [wix, fleetguard are better] am i correct?

Here is the TSB...
TSB 09-004-01

I suggest using a quality oil filter. Fleetgaurd, Donaldson, Luberfiner, etc.

I don't even like using Wix/Napa filters... (Oil Filter on the left - Fuel filters center and right)

Even living way out here in the middle of nowhere Idaho I still spend a extra $2 buck to get a good oil and fuel filters it just to risky to use a cheapy filters...

Also using good oils...
