So in April I’ve had my truck for a year. I have a company vehicle which is the biggest blessing to maintaining a car for a long time. Currently around 2800 miles on it.

I know they say change the oil every 6 months or so and so miles whichever comes first, but honestly I feel like that 6 month interval is a bunch of BS.

What’s you guys input if I’m only doing not even 5k a year on it, changing oil once a year at dealership?

I can’t see it being bad and I’m waiting on my catch can which will help this even more.

Thanks.

A catch can doesn't help with driving the moisture out of the oil. If all your driving the truck is short trips around town, it's probably a good idea to change every 6 months. If your putting long miles traveling or towing then parking the truck for months at a time, do the oil change before you start traveling.

It does help with some moisture.

Yea, around town throughout month, 40 mi trips 1-2 times a month 200mi trips every couple months. Summer is when the longer trips happen for vacation and such in which case April oil change would be perfect timing.

Yesterday, I took my RAM 2500 into the dealer for a premium oil change (PUP). The windshield reminder for the next oil change is dated for 1 year out or 10K miles, whichever comes first. As long as your periodically running the motor and not storing the truck for months on end, a 1 year interval should be fine.

Wow 2500s must have better or more oil that’s crazy a year or 10k haha.

I mean yea honestly it’ll sit sometimes 1-3 weeks if I’m super busy with work, but even then I don’t think that’ll really ruin anything if I pay for a premium each year as well like you did.

Your dime. It could sit. My thought would be moisture in the oil... If just sitting long long times, every 6 months. And before summer, long trips, oh yeah.....

But all IMHO..........

I get mine changed once a year, whether it needs it or not, at the dealer.............

Bought mine new in July 2012 with 10 miles on it (which I did most of during the test drive), and currently it has 27,650 miles on it, give or take about 25 miles.

The time frame is due to the metal in the engine heating up & cooling down with outside air temp. The air inside the engine will cause sweat/condensation from the moisture in it (not much tho) and over time, it builds up.

If you start the engine and let it run till it gets up to NOP (normal operating temperature) every now and then, it will 'burn' off this moisture by evaporating it and expelling it thru the pvc system/catch can, or simply burning it if in the cylinders/intake..........but once you turn it off, the whole cycle starts all over again.

It is especially noticeable when the engine is cooling down from the hot moist air in it. That's why lots of short driving trips where the engine never really gets to NOP is worse for the engine than normal driving where it reaches NOP and stays there for awhile.

That's why they say 6 mo or 3k

Good deal thanks guys.

I usually let the truck start until the fluid temp is where it should be anyway until I get going initially anyway.

I bought my truck new in October 2017, had the first oil change at 5000 miles in May 2018. I was reluctant to go this long but I’ve been assured that they are in fact made to go 10k or 12 months. I’ve got 11,500 currently and I’m considering getting getting it done at the dealer and switching to full synthetic just because I have the u53 recall I might as well kill two birds.

In my honest opinion, the dealership charges about $40 for an oil change. In your case its cheap insurance to do it every 6 months. I do about 10k a year now so I do it every 5k or 6 months. I will say the oil life monitor at my truck is at about 50% when I have 5k miles on the oil.
